PLEASE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Scully- you're my one in five billion"- Fox Mulder "Even though the strongest emotion - true love =96 may endure, without expression of that devotion, it would be as well that it did not exist."- Claire Mooney (Wilma) Mulder unlocked the door to his apartment and stumbled in wearily. It had been one hell of a day. They had spent endless hours ploughing through paper work and Scully had been in a foul mood because of what she called "his incessant need to avoid all administration". She just didn't seem to understand that he was useless at that sort of thing. Scully had a unique ability to deal with mountains of paperwork in a frighteningly efficient manner. He was obviously, more interested in finding some more X-Files to pursue. He knew he had been a royal pain in the ass, but he didn't want to have to tell her what he knew was the inevitable. Diana was "dropping by" tomorrow and AD Skinner wanted her to work with Mulder on a particularly unusual VCS case. Mulder had asked Skinner why he and Scully couldn't do it. Skinner had responded with one a look and replied "Agent Mulder, I realise that you and Agent Scully have a strong and successful partnership. That should not, however, be an issue if I request either one of you separately. The simple reason is that Agent Scully is of greater use to the FBI with her skills in Pathology. And in this case it is not the pathology we are worried about. It's the motive. So I have therefore, called upon Agent Fowley's expertise and your own in this area." Mulder had desperately wanted to argue that Scully was still a good agent, even if her pathology skills weren't required this time. He knew better. He did not want to work with Diana again, because apart form the fact it separated him from Scully and their current cases, it dredged up to many unpleasant memories for him. Diana and he had a painful history and while he found it somewhat difficult to be around her she seemed to regard it as though nothing had ever happened between them. Well?most of the time she did anyway. What he was left with now was having to face Scully, having to explain to her that he wasn't going to be around for the next few days. In normal circumstances that probably wouldn't have been a problem. She would have welcomed a few days of peace, quiet and a chance to unwind without him hauling her up and down the country to examine endless "unexplained phenomena". What was going to be a problem, he was sure, was the fact that he was going on this latest expedition with Diana, a person who he knew Scully could not stand. The hostility between the pair during the time with Gibson Praise had been evident. He knew it seemed to Scully like he was comfortable at slipping back into "old habit" with Diana, and he regretted that. He decided that the best thing to do would be to take the coward's way out and call Scully. So he did. "Hello?" she asked, picking up the phone in her apartment after a few rings. "Hey Scully it's me." He said. "What's up?" was the reply. He could almost see her rolling her eyes. "Well there was a slight oversight today. Something I forgot to tell you when I got called back from Skinner's office." "Yeah?" "He wants me to work on the case for VCS for the next little while." "Oh?okay. Why didn't you tell me Mulder? I mean I'm sure I can sacrifice you for a few days. Just don't think you're getting away with all that paperwork, I'll be sure to send it up." "Ok Scully, sure. Ah? you see the thing is I'll be partnered with someone during this case ~ Diana." Mulder waited. She said nothing. He wished now that he had told her face to face, for although it would have been tougher to do, at least then he would still have been able to see the reaction. "Scully you there?" "Sure I'm here." She said quietly, almost stonily. "Umm, you okay with this?" "What's there to be okay about Mulder? You got re-assigned to VCS with a new partner for a few days. I'm sure I can handle that. See you tomorrow." "Sure. 'night Scully." "Yes." She said Putting down the phone. "Bitch" was the first word that sprung into Scully's mind. She could just picture her now, cavorting around with Mulder. Staying in cheap motels with him, slyly knocking on his door at night and coaxing him gently until their old romance was re-ignited with a ferocious passion. And once that happened well there would be no stopping it. Sure, she knew that circumstances had changed between her and Mulder recently, but things were hardly steam-rolling along and Diana was of course his old flame, or "chickadee" as Frohike had so tactfully put it. She refused to let herself be annoyed about this, and so to try and take her mind off it she decided that a nice long soak would be the best option. About 45 minutes later, Scully was just climbing out if the bath, feeling marginally better when she heard a sharp knock at the door. Groaning she wrapped a towel round her hastily and walked out into the hall. "Who is it?" she yelled "It's me Scully." Came the reply. Stupid of me to even ask, she thought. Who on earth would back calling round at this time on a Tuesday night apart from Mulder. Forgetting the fact the she was dressed in only a towel, she walked to the door. She opened it to reveal Mulder looking gorgeous in his leather jacket and jeans, carrying a four pack of beer and a pizza. "Peace Offering." He said simply, walking into her apartment and shrugging out of his jacket. "Sure Mulder. I'm just going to shove some clothes on, I'll be right out okay?" "Well Scully, if you insist. Personally, I kinda like you in that." "Not tonight Mulder." Was the curt reply he received as she disappeared into the bedroom and he started to flick aimlessly through the channels of the television. He was beginning to think that he could get used to staying in her flat. Scully kept it neat, something he never had the energy or the enthusiasm for ~ a bit like paperwork actually. Her fridge was always stocked, far be it that Scully would be un-prepared for a sudden dinner-party it seemed. Then, finally, and most importantly, Scully was there. Over the past few months or so things had begun to develop between them. It had all started when? hell, when had it all started? Physically their relationship had crossed a new barrier just after Padgett, but he was unsure of when the real turning point came. Scully had insisted that they take things slowly, a little TOO slowly for Mulder's personal liking, but he wasn't about to argue with her. Mainly because he didn't want her to feel suffocated and mainly, because he knew she was scared. He was scared too. But then again, he had always been the one to take risks. Scully came out and sat down beside Mulder on the couch, grabbing a beer and popping it open. She took a long drink and wiped her mouth in a rather unladylike fashion. He too opened a beer and drank. "Scully I want to talk about this whole Diana thing." "There's nothing to talk about Mulder. It's you that's making the issue out of it." He set his beer down on the table and shifted just a little bit closer to her so that his thigh brushed against hers. "I don't want you to think that you can't trust me Scully. I would hate that." "What do you mean TRUST you Mulder. Whatever you do is your business." "Scully?" he said softly. "You know how I feel about you?" "Do I Mulder?" she said turning sharply. "I mean you never were too keen on my idea of taking things one day at a time. Sure, you come round sometimes, we watch videos, we laugh, we kiss, we sleep together. You treat me just like a girlfriend?sometimes. How should I know if that's all you want? I'm sure Diana will be happy to re-kindle your relationship, and she wouldn't been as slow as me Mulder." Mulder sighed as Scully jumped up from the couch and began to pace up and down the room. Part of him understood why she insisted on torturing herself like this; after all, he was the expert when it came to self- torture. The other part of him, however, couldn't fathom why on earth she doubted his loyalty to her. "Scully, please." He said standing up and walking over to her. She stopped pacing as he came nearer and he cautiously slid his arms around her waist, drawing her into the protection of his chest. "Don't do this to yourself. You DO know how I feel about you. I love you Scully." She froze when she heard those words spoken from his mouth. He hadn't said that to her yet. Part of her had been subconsciously wishing that he would. The same part of her that cried when he didn't say those words the first time they had made love. She spun around so that she was facing him. "What?" "Don't act like it's the first time I've said it Scully." He laughed softly, trying to ease the atmosphere. "It is." She said simply. "Technically, you may think it is. And although I DID say it when I returned from Bermuda, I say it to you all the time Scully. During those times when you were in hospital. Every time I held your hand. Every time I said goodnight to you. And recently, every time I have kissed you." She began to nod, a combination of feeling threatening to overwhelm her. Those emotions she felt were mirrored when she looked into his eyes and she kissed him softly. She then pulled away, squeezing his hand and looking at him desperately. He knew this was her way of saying sorry and he smiled in order to re-assure her as they kissed again. "Scully, there are so many risks attached to our being involved. Simply, because of our work on The X-Files. But don't think I would have be taking these risks if I didn't think for one second that we weren't going to last. Maybe that's why it took us so long. I was afraid that I would lose you if something went wrong. And I'd rather have my own little bit of you than none of you." "You're not going to lose me." She whispered. "I love you." Mulder could only pray to whoever was out there that he never did lose her. That they never lost each other, or their faith in each other. It was decided that that Mulder and Scully would travel to work separately tomorrow. Just because they wanted to avoid any confrontations with Diana, for Mulder knew that Scully was uncomfortable around her and didn't trust her. He still believed that Scully's doubts about Diana, were slightly unfounded, then again he had known her intimately for a few years and those years were not easily erased from his memory. When he had left Scully in her apartment to go to work, she was still drinking her coffee. He had kissed her lightly, noting the smile that played on her lips as he did so. Both of them knew that as soon as he stepped out of the door, he would become Special Agent Mulder, rather than just plain "Mulder". He drove to work and listened to the radio, trying in vain to keep his mind off of Scully. When her entered the X-Files office he found Diana sitting on his desk and he thanked himself mentally for persuading Scully that it was best he went to work first. He didn't even want to imagine the reaction that would have occurred had Scully entered first and discovered Diane perched in what appeared to be a rather precarious position. "Hi Fox." She said. "I was really pleased to hear that we will be working together again ~ weren't you?" Mulder chuckled to himself quietly. "So, have you heard any more about this case then?" he asked. "Actually," said Diana sliding off of the desk, "we have a meeting with AD Skinner right about now for our briefing. Shall we go?" "Uh, sure." Said Mulder. "You go on ahead, I'll be right up, there's just one thing left that I have to do." "Okay." Said Diana walking out the door, only after giving him a long glance. Mulder grabbed a piece of paper from his desk and hastily scribbled a note to Scully telling her that he would call her. He then sighed and reluctantly headed for the door, trying to keep this mind of the fact that sometime very soon she would be walking about the office, drinking coffee and burying herself in paperwork. He didn't really want to be away from her now ~ after all that was said and done last night, he felt as though leaving her would be much harder that it ever used to be. The fact that there were cell phones and e-mails did not offer much consolation to him. And Diana? well SHE was a completely different problem all together. Skinner seemed to drone on for hours, and Diane smoothly chatted to him, while Mulder sat there is silence thinking of Scully and not listening to a word uttered from his superior's mouth. "So Agent Mulder," said Skinner speaking to him harshly, as if suddenly noticing the younger man's lack of focus. "I can entrust you and Agent Fowley to be on the first plane to Detroit after these recent developments. I'll have my secretary arrange car rental for you. All you'll need to do when you get there is find a motel." "What? Uh, I mean yes, sir. When is the next flight to Detroit?" "I would imagine sometime this afternoon." "Well Sir, there could be a problem there. You see there is a matter concerning my current investigations that Agent Scully and I both need to deal with. So if Agent Fowley doesn't mind taking this afternoon's flight out by herself, I will join her sometime this evening." "Very well Agent Mulder." Said Skinner sighing, "just ensure that you get there as soon as you can. This is a matter of some importance. "Of course Sir, I understand." Said Mulder nodding and hastily exiting the room. Mulder took the stairs down to the basement two at a time as he always did, unless he was with Scully who's shorter legs couldn't quite match his own. He slipped into the office quietly and crept up on an un-suspecting Scully. He slipped his arms around her waist, kissing her neck gently. "Jesus?" said Scully spinning round. "Now Scully," said Mulder, his face held a look of mock hurt. "Please tell me you knew who that was. I don't want to hear that you've got any other men on the go." Scully didn't laugh at this comment, which was to be expected her supposed. "What are you doing down here anyway? Where's Cruella?" She asked "Scully I wish you wouldn't call her that. Well Skinner wants us to go out to Detroit as soon as posible. I just wanted to let you know." "How long for?" asked Scully, trying to hide her disappointment, even though she really knew the answer to this question. "For as long as it takes." "So when's your flight?" "Well it was supposed to be this afternoon, but I managed to convince Skinner that I has some unfinished business down here that I really couldn't leave." "Aww, Mulder that was sweet of you but I can really handle the paperwork by myself." "You know very well I wasn't talking about paperwork." He said kissing her again and grabbing her hand. "C'mon Scully. Let's take a drive." Scully climbed into the car beside Mulder and looked at him quizzically. "Where exactly are we going?" She asked. "Just a drive. Spontaneity Scully, it's the spice of life." "Isn't that variety Mulder?" "Whatever. You wanna stop home and get changed first. You might feel more comfortable that way." "Well, I would? IF I knew where we were going." "I don't know why you think I've got something planned Scully. I truly haven't." He slowed the car to a halt at her apartment and they both climbed out. Scully seemed to have finally resigned to the fact that he truly didn't know where they were going, or at the very least he didn't want her to know. He quickly changed into his comfiest jeans and a black t-shirt and as he dressed he pondered where exactly he WAS going to take her. Then he remembered ~ the perfect spot. Suddenly he couldn't wait to get there and he walked into her room. Scully was standing pulling a top over her head. "You ready yet?" he asked. "Yeah Mulder, I always go out in my underwear." "Hey Scully, I wouldn't mind." He winked. "God what is going on with you. You are so impatient." Finally, after also changing into jeans, Scully was ready to go and Mulder led her back down to the car. The place he had in mind was a lake about an hour's drive away. At this time on a weekday it would be all but deserted, he was sure of it. When they reached his desired spot, they climbed out of the car and began to walk. Tentatively Mulder took Scully's hand. She responded to his gesture, intertwining their fingers, almost automatically. They walked in silence for a few minutes. No words really needed to be said. Mulder was thinking how he wished he could stay here, with her and not be stuck with Diana. It was Scully he wanted to be staying in cheap motels with, trampling through mud with, spending endless hours on planes and in rental cars with, eating in diners with ~ NOT DIANA. "Pity we didn't think to bring a picnic or something. It's lovely here. I remember we used to come down with my Mom when we were small. I always liked it." Said Scully softly, breaking their silence They sat down on the grass and Mulder turned toward Scully. "I just wanted to spend the day with you before I had to leave. I don't want to leave. Stupid, I know." "Yeah, stupid" smiled Scully. "Sweet though." He laughed and they kissed again. For how long, neither seemed to be able to calculate. But it was intoxicating though. Scully could quite happily devour every single bit of him when it came to the kisses he gave her. She pulled away gently, almost gasping for breath. "We didn't get a chance to do that properly last night." "Nah," he smiled. "We were too busy doing?other things." "You ever think how surreal this whole thing is. I mean, sure I have always wanted romance and colour and life and light. But, you seemed quite happy in the dark. It's just like you said when we were driving out to Area 51, to you that was a normal life, you liked it." Mulder thought about this for a while. It was difficult for him to communicate to her how much his perspective had changed. Suddenly Samantha, the truth, the entire conspiracy, were no longer the most important things in his life. The day he admitted his true feeling for her was the day that those things had ceased to become as important as they once were. "Scully, I wasn't happy there. Just familiar." She was silent for a few moments, as if contemplating his words. "So what do you see as your ideal life now?" "I'm not sure. I still want to work. I know that I'll reach the end one day soon, maybe I will pursue it as more of hobby than my life's work. I want to spend as much time as possible with you. I guess you never really know how much time you have left. How do you feel about these things then?" "Yeah? I want children. And the fact that I can't have them?sometimes I'm okay with it. But, other times, it just hurts too much." She took a deep breath and cast her eyes downward. Mulder knew that it was NOT like Scully to open up to him like that, so he relished the opportunity. "I know Scully. There are ways for you to have children though. Fertility doctor's have breakthrough's all the time. You could try IVF or one of these other methods. Just don't lose sight of that." He touched her face gently with his hand and kissed her eyelids. "I love you Scully." And so they spent the rest of the day, and later, the night in each other's arms. Scully had fallen asleep on the bed, and reluctant as he was to leave, his flight was in 45 minutes, and he was risking missing it, so he gently shook her awake as he grabbed his things. "I gotta go now Scully. Flight to Detroit is in 45." She rolled over nodding sleepily. Mulder had called Diana, telling her that the evening flight was full and that he wold get the first morning one. She has sounded less than pleased, telling him that they needed him down here now, but he argued that it was only a night's worth of sleep difference(or lack of it were he and Scully were concerned) and that they wouldn't be doing much nocturnal investigating anyway. Mulder kissed Sully goodbye gently as she headed for the shower before starting her day's work. She didn't want him to leave. She didn't like the idea of him being in Cruella's clutches. Immature though she knew it was, she felt this incessant need to stop that bitch getting her hands on "her man". The fact that Mulder was a thinking man, did little to ease her pre-occupied thoughts. She knew better than most how passionate a man he was and she hoped that he would be able to resist Diana's amorous advances. Stepping under the hot shower and letting the water stream down her back, she pondered these thoughts desperately trying to stop this torrent of unwanted thoughts and transform them into something worthwhile. Scully waited all day for Mulder to call. 'Where is he?' she thought. 'Surely he would have found the time to call me by now?' She spent a great proportion of her time staring idly into space, waiting for the shrill ring of the telephone. It did not come. And she was determined to appear like the pathetic lonely girlfriend and call him. As she let herself back into her apartment after a long day in front of a computer screen, she slipped out of her shoes and flopped down on the couch. She was about to dose off into a hazy slumber when she heard the muffled bleeping of her cell phone from inside her suit jacket. Wearily, she rose to her feet and answered it. "Scully." "Hey there. Would you by chance be the Dana Scully who's in love with one of the most charasmatic and handsome men on the planet." Scully smiled and the warm and familiar sound of his voice and sank back down on the couch. "I might be." She laughed. "How are you Mulder?" "Missing you. Just spent an enitre day being dragged around houses questioning people. And do you know what I discovered Scully?" "Indulge me, please" Came the light reply. That having someone agree with you all the time, no-one to look at you as though you really * had* lost it, well it's not all it's made out to be." "Is that so?" "Yeah. So how's the paperwork." "Want to know the truth? I hardly did any of it. Spent too much time waiting for you to call. More fool me." "Aww, I'm touched." They spent over an hour talking, drifting from the case that Mulder was working on to idle chat, and arguing over his latest theory. When they eventually hang up the phone to allow them both to get some sleep, Scully realised that she had a stupid smile plastered on her face like an idiotic circus clown. As she changed into her bedroom attire she wondered if she had become one if those bubbling, giggly girls that she had detested all through high school. Mulder and Scully spent the week conversing by phone and e-mail. Mulder was careful to aviod any mention of Diana in his case ~ which he deemed to be "just your ordinary, manic serial-killer" ~ and Sully did not ask about her. The week without him did not exactly drag by, but it didn't fly by either. She was called to consult on the pathology of a couple of VCS cases and she enjoyed the praise that she received due to her findings. Foolishly, her apartment seemed empty without him. Over the past few months she had grown used to finding him sprawled out on the couch the hood up on his sweatshirt, munching directly out of the cereal box. This level of slobbing, was one that she was unable to stoop too. Unless you counted a few nights in front of the t.v. with an old weepie movie and a tub of Ben and Jerry's. She had finally reached the over-whelming scientific conclusion that opposites DO attract. It was the Wednesday evening, almost a full week since Mulder had left and Scully was just coming back from the grocery store. She rushed to answer the phone as she heard it's ring from outside her apartment. "Hello," she said breathlessly "Been running a marathon or something Scully?" "Just got in from the grocery store. Mulder, when are you coming home?" she said, asking the question that had been at the tip of her tongue ever since he left. "Well, I was actually calling about that?" "Really, when are you then? Do you want me to come pick you up at the airport." "Nah, that won't be necessary." Scully spun around to find him standing at her still-open doorway wearing that stupid grin of his. Her face broke into the clown smile again as strode towards her and enveloped her in his arms, kissing. When they finally pulled apart she opened her mouth to speak, but he silenced her with a finger to her lips. "Shh, just as second. I've been thinking while I was away?Remember that charismatic, handsome man I asked you if you were going out with." She nodded silently. "Well, what would you say if he asked you to be his wife." "I would make a mental note to contact the nearest psychiatrist and say yes." And the giggling high school girl kissed her fiance. "Well that's settled then. Never doubt how much I love you Scully?never doubt it. Preperations for the wedding were going surprisingly well. They had spoken to their necessary superiors and thankfully not come under too much resistance. They were told that they could remain as they were in The X-Files with their situations to be "reviewed" in sixth month's. Scully's mother had been predictably delighted and now, with only a week until their wedding, Scully still couldn't believe how quickly events had progressed. They were sitting silently in their office one morning when there was a sharp knock at the door and in strode Diana. "Dana," she nodded. "Fox, I need to get you to sign a copy of this expense report from our trip last month. Apparently it was over-looked before." Mulder and Scully exchanged glances, and strangely Scully did not feel the familiar jealous instincts rise up. This was probably to do with the fact that she knew her place with Mulder, and didn't have to live in a state of confused feelings and tormented thoughts. "So I hear you two are getting married?" Asked Diana curtly. "Quite the gossip around the office you know." "Yes we are." Said Mulder quickly, closing the cap on his pen and handing the form back to Diana. "This Saturday as a matter of fact." "Well," said Diane turning for him to stare at Scully. "I just hope for your sake it goes better than my marriage to Fox did." And with that she stormed out the room. Scully sat unmoving, clearly in a state of unfathomable shock. "Scully," said Mulder moving to her side and touching her shoulder lightly. "I know how it seems?" "Was what she said true Mulder?" asked Scully. "I know I should have?" "WAS IT TRUE MULDER?" He stared at the ground for a long time. "Yes" he whispered hoarsely. Scully rose from her seat, grabbing her jacket and fleeing from the room, determined not to let him see her torrent of tears. Mulder tried her cell phone all day, but it was switched off just as he had predicted. He saw her go back into the apartment and so her tried phoning her there. The machine clicked on and he gazed up at her window form outside in his car. He tried knocking on her door and he unlocked it with his key, but she had put the chain on, and the crack that he could see through the ajar door did not reveal her. He shouted through the door and pleaded with her to let him talk. Eventually she came to the door, her eyes swollen her hair dishevelled. "Please, can I come in? he asked. She shook her head feircely. "Why didn't you tell me you were married to her?" "You never asked." He answered lamely. She closed her eyes and tried to block out the hurt. "If there was one thing I never envisaged you doing Mulder was keeping something from me like this. Were you ever planning on telling me?" He honestly couldn't answer and she began to shut the door. "Please Mulder, if I mean anything to you then leave me alone. I don't think we should get married on Saturday." It was a long week for Mulder. He spent it in total frustration. He had wrecked his apartment which had lay empty for weeks in fits of rage and downed more shots of tequilla at the local bar than he cared to count. Eventually on Friday night sober and grief-stricken he picked up the phone pressing the familiar number of Scully's house. As exoected, she did not answer and instead he was greated with her neutral tone. "Hi this is Dana Scully, I'm sorry but I can't take your call. Please leave a message and I'll get back to you." Creasing his brow in frustration Mulder decided to leave a message. "Scully, it's me. I know you're there and I know that there isn't anything I can say to excuse what I did by not telling you? The truth is Scully, I didn't know how to tell you. The eighteen months that I was married to Diana are the worst and most regrettable of my life. I didn't love her, I thought I needed her in order to become "the perfect agent" and I know now that I was wrong. I think I really knew then that I was wrong. You're not her Scully. I want to marry you because I love you. And the pride and love I felt when you agreed to marry me is like nothing I have ever experienced before. Please don't punish me now for a mistake I made eight years ago. Knowing that I hurt you in more punishment than I could ever handle?" He waited for some kind of reply, but naturally received none. "I'm going to head out of town for a few das, maybe to clear my head. I don't know. I'll call?" Suddenly he heard the click of the phone being picked up and Scully's voice warmed his heart "Where are you going G-Man, you've got a wedding in the morning." His entire body sighed with relief "I'm sorry Scully." "I know, I am too. I don't want to fight with you. I love you. Now come over and celebrate your last night as a free man." The sentence was barely out of her lips when he had dropped the phone and was racing out to his car. I know that sucked. SOB SOB BUT THEY LOVE EACH OTHER!!!!
