When they are forced to spend some time apart from each other, they really start to appreciate their unique relationship much more. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART ONE: AN INVITATION XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Another day, another dollar, another so-called X-File. If I had a dollar for every stupid case Mulder and I have been on this year, I could retire this instant. Why do I stay? I should be on a sunny beach, sitting under a palm tree, with a frosty beverage, the kind with the paper umbrellas in it-- but NOOO!--I have to be in the middle of the boonies with Mulder, working on a case. But the thought of having Mulder on that sunny beach with me wouldn't be a bad idea...no, Dana, don't go there. If Mulder sees you with a goofy grin on your face, he'll ask me what's wrong... "So, Scully, can I get your medical opinion on this? Scully?" "Yeah, Mulder. In a minute--I need to get my notes together." xxxxxxx Scully sure is acting weird. Maybe she didn't get enough sleep last night. I hope she's okay. I won't dare ask her, 'cause I know I'll get her patented answer: 'Mulder, I'm fine.' It's just this case--even I know it wasn't worth our time. When we get back to DC, I think I'll invite her over to watch a movie with me--that will cheer her up... "Mulder, can I have the car keys, please? Mulder--car keys?" "Oh, yeah--sure, Scully, no problem." xxxxxxx Mulder sure is acting strange. Maybe he didn't get enough sleep last night. I hope he's okay. He would probably tell me he was thinking about the Knicks game last night, or something mundane like that. When we get back to DC, I think I'll invite him over for dinner--lasagna. Yeah, Mulder *loves* my lasagna. When was the last time he had a home-cooked meal, anyway? Probably the last time I cooked him lasagna. Boy, I have no life... xxxxxxx She asked for the car keys again. She's been doing that a lot lately. Every time a case ends, she drives us to the airport to go home. I've decided it's best not to argue with her anymore about this subject, as I royally put my foot in my mouth with my silly comment four years ago. No, Scully, I don't really believe your legs are too short to reach the pedals. Just blame it on the crazy things going on in that crazy town. Besides, I love your legs. Who wouldn't love 'em--nice and lean, with the slightest bit of muscle--whoa, Fox buddy! Slow down there! Where are you going with this? Besides, if Phillip Padgett can write about her, certainly I can think about her. But what would Dana think? 'Dana'--I'd love to call her Dana everyday... "We're here, Mulder." "What? Oh, the airport. Right. I'll get our bags out of the trunk." Boy, I have no life... xxxxxxx Luckily for us, the case ended on a Friday, so I was able to ask Mulder about dinner once we got off the plane. "Mulder, why don't you come over to my place tomorrow night? I'll make lasagna." "Scully, you don't have to do that." "No excuses, Mulder; tomorrow night at eight o'clock sharp! Besides, when was the last time you had a home-cooked meal?" "Wow, I don't know, Scully. Probably the last time you made lasagna for me--about 3 months ago." "You're right, but you love my lasagna--you told me yourself. You weren't just being nice to me, were you? That's it! You *hate* my lasagna and you didn't want to hurt my feelings!" "No, that's not it at all..." xxxxxxx She started to walk away from me. I ran to her and grabbed her gently by the shoulders, then turned her around to face me. "Scully, I would be honored to have dinner with you tomorrow night--8pm sharp!" "Okay, Mulder." "Should I dress up or something?" "No, silly, casual is fine. It's just two friends sharing a meal together." "You know, Scully, I'd share anything with you..." "Mulderr..." She punched me in the arm--lightly. I just love the way she said my name--soft and husky. Oooh, I could listen to her talk to me in that voice all day and night! What is wrong with me? I offered to drive her home--I left my car at the lot--but Scully said she needed to go the grocery store before going home, and she didn't want to hold me up. How considerate of her. xxxxxxx I hailed a taxi, and proceeded to the nearest grocery store. I made the driver wait--told him he would get a big tip if he did--and did all my shopping so quickly, it surprised the poor guy. Probably thought I had changed my mind. I got home in an hour. Twenty-fours to prepare--was it going to be enough time? To Be Continued... The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART TWO: EUROPA (EARTH'S CRY HEAVEN'S SMILE) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX MULDER'S APARTMENT ALEXANDRIA, VA 10:13pm I made it home pretty quickly--not much traffic this time of night. I think I'll call Scully in an hour or so, and give her some time to get home. Probably buying out the entire store. She doesn't need to fix me a fancy dinner to impress me--I'm already impressed. Damn, I've been impressed ever since she walked through my door all those years ago. I'm still worried about her, though--she did look tired today. I'll get it out of her when I call. Better go unpack... xxxxxxx SCULLY'S APARTMENT ANNAPOLIS, MD 11:21pm Well, got home in record time, and I also got unpacked and put all the groceries away. Think I'll take a soak in a nice hot tub--no, scratch that--TV. Flipped through the channels and found a great film on American Movie Classics. I sat down to watch it, when all of a sudden, the phone rings. It's probably Mulder checking to see if I made it home. I decided to let my machine get it--doesn't he know how late it is? After three rings, the machine clicked on, but I thought better of it. Best to get this done now, or he'll call again... "Mulder, I'm home safe and sound." "Scully, how did you know it was me?" "Who else would call me this late?" "Sorry, Scully, I just wanted to make sure you got home okay. Are you alright?" "Of course I'm alright! Mulder, in case you haven't noticed, I'm an FBI agent--I can take care of myself." "Why didn't you pick up the phone right away?" "What's this--'Twenty Questions'? Look, Mulder, I knew it was you, that's why I didn't pick up the phone! I'm hanging up now..." "Wait, Scully! What is that noise?" "*Another* question? If you must know, that is my television. I'm watching a movie, at least I was until I was so rudely interrupted!" "And what movie would that be?" "It Happened One Night." "It Happened One Night?" "Yes, Mulder--it's playing on AMC right now." "Is it any good?" "Is it any good? It only won the Best Picture Oscar in 1934. Claudette Colbert & Clark Gable--it really is good, Mulder. You should watch it." "Okay, but one more question, Scully--and I want you to tell me the truth." "Fine--what is it?" "You looked really tired today. Are you getting enough sleep?" "Mulder! I just had a slight headache, that's all--I'm okay." "Okay, Scully. I guess I'll let you go, then." "You're not thinking of canceling our dinner, are you?" "No, Scully. Actually, I'm looking forward to it." "Great, then I'll see you tomorrow, and don't you dare be late!" "Wouldn't dream of it. And speaking of dreams, you have some sweet ones tonight. Goodnight, Scully." "'Night, Mulder--you have pleasant dreams yourself." xxxxxxx So, she had a headache! Why didn't she tell me? Well, as long as she's okay, I'll let it slide this time. What channel did she say it was on? AMC--yeah, here it is. Only Scully would consider some old black & white movie 'good', but I'll check it out--gotta have something to talk about tomorrow... xxxxxxx Finally got Mulder off the phone. What was with all of those questions? And the nerve of him to ask me if I'm getting enough sleep! Well, I'm in no mood for Colbert & Gable now--guess I'll take that bath and hit the sheets-- I've got a busy day tomorrow... xxxxxxx Had an uneasy night. I went to bed after the movie finished, but I just sat there--I was way too wired. Decided to get in my car, and before I knew it, I was at Scully's place. I just sat there looking at her window. Her lights were still on. After I sat there for what seemed like an eternity, I saw Scully come to the window, and look out. It was now 2am--what was she still doing up? She had on her blue pajamas. Luckily, I didn't park directly in front of her apartment, or she would've seen me. Don't want her to think I was spying on her. She stood there about five minutes, and walked away. The lights went out after that. Hopefully she's going to bed now--think I'll do the same when I get home... xxxxxxx Soaked in the tub for an hour, and watched the end of the movie. Hit the sheets after that, but after a half hour, I got up. Tossing and turning is not helping me get to dreamland at all. So I have some tea, and proceed to pace my apartment. Why am I so wired? I bet Mulder didn't even watch the movie--probably turned on SportsCenter on ESPN to get the basketball scores. Okay, it's 2am Dana, what are you going to do? I guess I'll look out the window--haven't done that yet! Full moon in the sky, not a soul on the street--wait, is that Mulder's car? Four cars down--it looks like his car, but it's too far away for me to tell. Boy, now I'm hallucinating--I've got to get back to bed... xxxxxxx I woke up at noon--don't usually sleep that late. I had an incredible dream about Scully. We were on a case, and she was wearing the blue pajamas I saw her in last night. What was so incredible about it was that neither I, nor any of the people we spoke to, said anything about it. We just went about our business as usual, and no one mentioned it once. She was wearing her heels, and I have no idea where she was carrying her gun. It was so strange. Think I'd better call Scully, and tell her about this. No, I wouldn't want her to get worried about me. Besides, she's probably getting ready for our dinner tonight. Only 7 hours and 55 minutes away... xxxxxxx Woke up at noon to a bright and sunny Saturday. I had the most amazing dream about Mulder. Our roles were reversed--I was now the believer, and Mulder the skeptic. It was so weird hearing myself tell him about the finer points of EBE's--extraterrestrial biological entities, UFO's, and the like. Guess I'll get dressed now. I need to go to the florist--this place needs brightening up! Only 7 hours and 45 minutes until dinnertime... xxxxxxx 7:55pm I made it to Scully's apartment 15 minutes ago, and here I am, sitting in the car. Why? I'm nervous, that's why. It's not like this is a date. I'd better go up--Scully doesn't want me to be late... xxxxxxx 7:58pm Everything's ready--where's Mulder? He'd better not be late! I was just getting my jeans on, when I heard a knock at the door. Why am I so nervous? This isn't a date... "Scully, it's me." "I'm coming." I open the door, and my heart almost stopped. Mulder was dressed all in black, and he looked absolutely yummy. How am I going to get through dinner now, with him looking so good? It's going to be a long night... "Hello, Mulder." "Hello, Scully--might I add that you look fantastic!" "Why, thank you, Mulder--you don't look half bad yourself." "Scully, are you hitting on me?" "Not a chance." xxxxxxx My heart almost stopped. I was kind of hoping she'd say yes. She did look great, though. In fact, she looked good enough to eat. She was wearing a pair of jeans that were a little too tight, hitting all the right places, I might add- -and a purple sweatshirt. She was also barefoot, but that wasn't the shocker. The shocker was her toenails were painted purple. Gee, I'm seeing a side of Scully I've never seen before--I think I like it, but how am I going to get through dinner when she's looking so fine? Mulder buddy, you are in trouble! "So, Mulder, I hope you're hungry." "What? Oh, yes, I'm starved!" "The lasagna's going to take about ten more minutes, but I've got some wine. Would you like some?" "Sure, Scully. Wine sounds nice." "Breadsticks for an appetizer?" "Sure--where's the bottle opener?" "The drawer by the microwave. You can't miss it." "Got it." I poured us two glasses and we sat at the kitchen table, eating our breadsticks in silence. Nervous silence, I guess. The bell on the stove rang, and I jumped out of my chair, nearly knocking it over. "It's okay, Mulder--the lasagna's ready." "Startled me, that's all." "How about some salad?" "Okay." She pulled the salad bowl and dressing out of the refrigerator. When she bent down to get the dressing, I swear my blood pressure rose! "Hope you like French?" "French--oh, the salad dressing. Yeah, sure, Scully." "Are you alright, Mulder? You look kind of pale." "I'm fine, Scully--let's eat! You get the lasagna, and I'll take care of the salad." xxxxxxx Boy, Mulder's acting way too nervous! I'd better try and calm him down... "Mulder, you weren't over here earlier this morning, like at 2am?" "No, Scully. Why do you ask?" "I could swear I saw your car 4 cars down from my apartment." "Nope--wasn't me." xxxxxxx "So, Scully--the salad is great, and the lasagna smells great--what's your secret?" "I can't tell you that. I could, but then I'd have to kill you! Just kidding! It's an old Scully recipe from my grandmother. Mom showed me how to make it years ago." "How is Maggie?" "She's great, Mulder. In fact, she wanted to know how you were doing the last time I spoke to her." "Oh, really?" "Yeah. She really worries about you--she considers you a part of the family, you know." "Well, it's nice to be wanted." "I'm sorry to bring up a sore point, Mulder." "That's okay. Mmm, this lasagna is better than I remember, Scully--you've really outdone yourself!" "Thanks, Mulder." xxxxxxx I think I just blushed ten shades of red! What's wrong with me? xxxxxxx After dinner, I offered to help Scully with the dishes. So here we are--she's washing and I'm rinsing. When we were finished, she blew soap in my face, so I proceeded to return the favor. She laughed then--giggled actually. It was the most beautiful sound I've heard in a long time. "Scully, wait--you've got a soap bubble on your nose." I grabbed a dishtowel and wiped it off. She closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, I was drowning... "Mulder, are you alright?" "Yeah, Scully. Why do you ask?" "Because you've got that same weird look on your face that you had before." "No, I'm alright. Hey, let's have some more wine, okay?" "Sure, Mulder, but let's have it in the living room. I can put some music on." "Great! Let's get the party started!" xxxxxxx I turned the radio on, and Mulder brought the wine. "Scully, I have a confession to make. I *was* at your apartment earlier this morning. I'm sorry I lied about it, but I was worried about you." "That's okay, Mulder. I couldn't sleep. I took a bath, then watched the rest of the movie, and--" "It Happened One Night? I liked it, Scully." "You did? I just knew for sure that wasn't your type of movie, Mulder. This is a surprise." "I'm full of surprises, Scully." "I really like your flowers, Scully. The color matches your sweatshirt, and your toenails for that matter." "Oh my God--I don't have any shoes on! I knew it was something I forgot!" "Don't worry about it. Tell me about these flowers." "Oh, these--they're tulips, Mulder." "Feeling in a purple mood, Scully?" "Yeah, I guess so. How about that wine, Mulder?" "Sure." xxxxxxx We sat down on the couch, and I poured the wine. "What's this music, Scully?" "Oh, this? That's the smooth jazz station. It relaxes me." "Can't you change it to something a little more upbeat?" "No, Mulder, I like a little mellow music in the evening. It really is a good station--you should try it sometime." "Maybe I will. Cheers!" "Cheers!" xxxxxxx We sipped our wine in silence. After a few minutes, one of my favorite songs started to play... "Oh, I *love* this song--Gato Barbieri!" "Gato who?" "Gato Barbieri--he's a saxophone player, and the song is Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)." xxxxxxx She jumped up, and held out her hand to me. "Dance with me, Mulder." How could I say no to that face! I took her hand, and we walked over to the window where we would have room to move. "I just love this song--it's *so* sexy!" I put my hand around her waist, and started to slow dance with her. As the haunting melody of Gato's sax filled the room, she told me about the time she first heard it. "It was a few years ago. I was listening to this station, and it came on. I was mesmerized! I'd never heard anything like it before. I called the station to find out the name of his album, and went out and bought it the next day. I've nearly worn the tape out. I've played it so many times... I couldn't say anything--I was thinking back to two years ago when we were working on the Great Mutato case. We danced like this back then too, only I don't think it was this close to each other. With her so close to me, I could smell her perfume, and it was stirring up feelings in me I shouldn't be having for my partner...thankfully, the song ended. "Scully, let's sit down. I'd like to talk to you." "About what, Mulder?" "About why you invited me here tonight--did you have some kind of ulterior motive?" "Mulder, what are you implying? This is just supposed to be dinner between two friends, that's all! But, if you must know, I was worried about you. You seemed so not yourself yesterday--I just wanted to cheer you up!" "OK, Scully. I'm sorry I brought it up!" She got up, and walked over to her bookcase. Scully just stood there with her back to me. I've done it now--got to do some damage control... xxxxxxx I stood there, just staring at the books, not really seeing them. And then I saw it on the bottom shelf, and I lit the candle that was there beside it... xxxxxxx "Scully, talk to me!" I ran over to her. "Scully, please say something!" I grabbed her shoulders, but I didn't turn her around. I saw what she was looking at. It was a picture frame. One side had a photo of her sister Melissa; the other side, her daughter Emily. I knew then where her mind was at... "Scully?" And then I heard it. She sniffled. I turned her around to face me. She was trying so hard not to cry. "I miss them so much..." And then they fell. Huge tears fell down her cheeks. She grabbed the pictures and candle, and went back to the couch. She placed the items on the table, right next to her vase of purple tulips. "Four years for Missy; almost two for Emily--gone too soon." I sat down next to her and grabbed her hands. They were so cold! "It's so not fair, Mulder. Why do we lose the ones we love?" "I can't answer that, Scully." We sat there, just staring at the pictures. They looked so much like Scully. It was uncanny. I just held her close to me while she sobbed. "That's okay, Scully--just let it out, I'm here." I smoothed the hair away from her face and whispered in her ear: "If it's any consolation, Scully, I miss them too." xxxxxxx I quieted down after Mulder's kind words, but I knew I had to say something about my awful behavior towards him after I found Emily. So I grabbed his hands and told him... "Mulder, I'd just like to let you know how sorry I am for the way I treated you during the whole Emily situation. My behavior was abominable. You were trying to be my friend, and I pushed you away. I don't know if I can ever forgive myself..." xxxxxxx Then her tears started to fall again. "Scully, it's okay, it's okay." I pulled her close to me and held her tight. I hate to see her in all this pain-- what can I do but hold her and try to allay her fears? "Shhh, Scully, it's alright. I knew that was the way you were dealing with it. I never held it against you!" "You didn't?" "No, Scully, you're one of the strongest women I know. I knew you would tell me when you were ready." "Two years is a long time to wait for an apology, Mulder." "I think you know by now that I'm a very patient man." "Yes, that you are, Mulder. Look at me! I must be a mess. I'll be right back." She padded across the floor to the bathroom to freshen up. I wanted to tell her that she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen, but I held back. I didn't want to scare her after the emotions we just shared! She came back five minutes later, wearing shoes this time, and her hair tied up in a ponytail. "Face all scrubbed clean, and ready to take on the world! How do I look?" "You look great, Scully. Come here..." We sat back down on the couch with our arms around each other, and holding hands. "Scully, I have a confession to make." "What is it, Mulder?" "I never told you this, but I thought of Emily as my daughter, too." xxxxxxx His words deeply touched me. How could he have known? "Oh, Mulder..." I grabbed him tight, and put my arms around his neck. I couldn't let him see my face right now... "Scully, I didn't mean to upset you again!" "It's okay, Mulder, because I have a confession to make as well: I always thought of you as Emily's daddy." xxxxxxx My heart was beating so fast, I almost didn't hear what she said. I had to see her face, and I would know it was true... "Scully, why didn't you ever tell me?" "I was scared, Mulder. We only had Emily for a few days, and then she was gone. I was so confused. I didn't know how to handle it." xxxxxxx He held me again, and we just stayed that way an endless time. I don't know how long it was, and I really didn't care. I was just glad that I had this man in my life. And then the smell started to invade my senses--his cologne, and the scent that is *only* Mulder's. It started to stir up feelings in me that I don't think I should be having for my partner... "Wow, look at the time! You should probably be heading home." "But it's still early, isn't it?" "Check your watch, G-man. It's after midnight." "Boy, time sure flies when you're having fun--and confessing!" "Mulderr..." xxxxxxx She punched me in the arm again, and that voice thingy--I've got to ask her how she does that, but not now! I grabbed my jacket from the chair, and walked towards the door, with Scully right behind me. "Drive carefully, Mulder--and call me when you get home." "Yes, Mom!" xxxxxxx I had to hold him one more time before he left--and before I lost the nerve! "Thanks so much, Mulder. For everything." "No thanks are necessary, Scully. You would do the same for me." "Yes, I would. Can I have another hug?" "Of course. Anything for a friend." xxxxxxx I held her close to me; I was finding it very difficult to let her go... "Gotta go, Scully." "Okay--call me?" "I will." Before I lost my nerve, I kissed her on the forehead, looked at her, ran my fingers across her lips, and left. xxxxxxx He kissed me on the forehead, and touched my lips with his fingers--just as I had done to him after the Cancer Man's surgery on his brain not too long ago. God, I never want to see him like that ever again--*so* confused, *so* vulnerable. I was at my wits end, trying to figure out how to save him... The phone rang. It could only be one person, so I picked up after only one ring. "Scully, it's me." "Yes, Mulder. Are you alright?" "I'm great, Scully--how 'bout yourself?" "Never better. Thanks for everything tonight." "That's what friends are for, Scully." "Goodnight, Mulder." "Goodnight, Scully." To Be Continued... Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile) is by Gato Barbieri, from two of his albums: CALIENTE & PASSION AND FIRE. Want to know more about him? Check out this website: http://centralentertainment.com/gato/ And I do think it's a sexy song--for an instrumental! The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART THREE: WANNA SEE SOMETHING REALLY SCARY? XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX SCULLY'S APARTMENT 9:03am I woke up to a blinding headache. After I got off the phone with Mulder last night, I went straight to bed. A peaceful, dreamless sleep, only to wake up to my head feeling like someone started a jackhammer on top of it. Thank God it's Sunday--I don't think I could go to work in this condition. So I took a couple of aspirin and proceeded to go about my day... xxxxxxx MULDER'S APARTMENT 5:34pm What a great day for doing nothing--and that's exactly what I did--absolutely nothing! Read the paper, watched the Yankees play on TV--now what? I know--I'll invite Scully over for that movie; it's the least I can do after last night. Hope she's home... "Hel-lo?" "Hey, Scully--it's me. Did I catch you sleeping?" "No, of course not. It's 5:37 Mulder, why are you calling me on a Sunday?" "I just wanted to invite you over for a little pizza, movie, and conversation--how 'bout it, Scully?" "Mulder, I don't think..." "I'm not taking no for an answer. I'm returning the favor for the great dinner you gave me last night." "But you don't have to, Mulder." "I know I don't have to--I *want* to." "Okay, Mulder, what time should I come over?" "How's about 7 sound?" "That's fine with me. It'll give me some time to get ready." "OK, great! You won't be disappointed, I promise. I'll let you go now, Scully. Catch you later!" xxxxxxx And with that, he hung up. Mulder all excited, and me in such agony. And to think I actually went to church today and prayed for this headache to end! I guess He heard me because it's been a dull throbbing for the last 3 hours or so. Guess I better get ready. I wouldn't want Mulder to be disappointed. 6:50pm So I'm here at Mulder's apartment. Saw the pizza guy show up five minutes ago. That must be for us. Don't think I could eat much right now. I took a couple more aspirin and washed it down with a healthy gulp of water. I hope Mulder appreciates me coming over here in my condition... xxxxxxx 6:56pm Okay, almost seven o'clock--where's Scully? She'd better not be late! I was just getting my jeans on, when I heard a knock on the door. That's my girl--I knew she'd make it... xxxxxxx "Mulder, it's me." "Coming! Well, we must be on the same wavelength. Both dressed in black. Must be an X-File." "Not on your life! Are you gonna let me in, or are we gonna talk in the hallway?" "Of course--come on in!" I came in, and he shuffled me over to the couch. The pizza box was on the table, with the smell of sausage and cheese wafting in the air. I guess I'll have a couple of slices; it won't hurt--besides, I haven't eaten since breakfast this morning! "Scully, I got exactly what you like--sausage, green peppers, mushrooms, *and* extra cheese!" "Thanks, Mulder, but you didn't have to go to all this trouble." "It was no trouble at all. Come on--let's dig in!" xxxxxxx "So, Scully--ready for that movie now?" "Why not, and what movie would that be?" "It's a surprise, but I know you'll like it. But you have to wait five minutes, while I fix the popcorn, okay?" "Sure, Mulder, but it better not be one of those flicks you keep in your drawer that you claim aren't yours." "Scully! Would I do that to you?" "I don't know, Mulder. I wonder about you sometimes." "You don't have to worry about that tonight--I promise. So kick off your shoes and get comfortable." xxxxxxx Five minutes later, Mulder emerged from the kitchen with a big bowl of microwave popcorn, and two beers. I probably shouldn't be having alcohol after taking aspirin, but I'll be here for a couple more hours. It shouldn't be a problem... "So, what's the movie, Mulder?" "So impatient, Scully! You'll know in about ten seconds." xxxxxxx She looked so cute sitting there, with her feet curled under her. I turned on the TV and grabbed the remote. Scully was really going to enjoy this movie... "The Exorcist! Oh, Mulderr..." There she goes with that voice thing again! She really relaxed once the movie started. She seemed so tense while we were eating... "One of my favorites--thanks, Mulder." "See--I knew you'd like it! But let's not talk right now-- I'm trying to watch the movie!" xxxxxxx I punched him in the arm. "Okay, Mulder, as long as you promise to hold my hand if you get scared." "It's a deal. Cheers!" "Cheers to you, too." We clinked bottles, and had a few handfuls of popcorn. I was really starting to relax and enjoy myself, but after about 45 minutes, I started to feel drowsy. I knew I shouldn't have had that beer... xxxxxxx We sat there in silence, munching on popcorn. I knew this was a great idea. Scully's eyes lit up once she saw what movie it was. But after a little over an hour, I felt Scully's head on my shoulder. I looked down at her, and she was sound asleep! I couldn't believe it--Scully had fallen asleep during one of her favorite movies! What should I do? Should I wake her up? No, Mulder, that wouldn't be a good idea. Look at her. She looks so peaceful, but her neck won't feel so great when she wakes up. So I did the only thing I could think of--I picked her up and carried her to my bedroom... xxxxxxx There was darkness everywhere. I woke up in unfamiliar surroundings. The clock on the bedside table said 10:05pm. I jumped up and turned on the light. Where am I, and how did I get here? Come on, Dana--think! What is the last think you remember? Pizza, popcorn, beer--Mulder... "Mulder! Mulder, are you here?" He came running into the room out of breath. "Scully! Are you okay?" "I don't know, Mulder. How did I get here?" "You fell asleep during the movie, and I didn't want you to wake up with a sore neck, so..." "I miraculously walked into your bedroom, and laid down for a nap?" "No, Scully. Actually, I picked you up and carried you in here." "You didn't?" "Yes, I did. But you don't have to worry about my back-- you're light as a feather!" "No time for jokes, Mulder. Why did you do that?" "Scully, you were really out of it--I'm surprised you didn't move once while I was carrying you in here. Is there something I should know? If you were tired, you could have cancelled on the movie." "No, that isn't it at all. Come over here, Mulder. I guess it's confession time again." xxxxxxx I didn't like the sound of that, but I stepped inside the room, and sat on the bed next to her. Hope this wasn't going to get really emotional like last night... "Mulder, I did something incredibly stupid. I've been suffering from a killer headache all day today. When you called to invite me over, it had slowed down some. So, I got dressed, and I came over here--but before I knocked on your door, I took a couple more aspirin. That, and the beer I had, made me drowsy. End of story--sorry I missed the movie, Mulder." "That's okay, Scully. How do you feel now?" "I feel fine, Mulder--really, I do. But I could go for a cup of coffee, if you don't mind?" "No problem. Let's go into the kitchen." xxxxxxx He put the kettle on the stove, took my hand, and led me back to the couch, where we waited for the whistle a few minutes later. Even though it was instant, the coffee was delicious. My headache was finally gone, and I felt great. Really refreshed. "Mulder, I'm gonna head home now. Sorry about the movie; did you watch it without me?" "I sure did, and I missed holding your hand during all the scary parts." "Next time we watch it together, I promise not to zombie out on you! Well, goodnight, Mulder." "Wait, before you go..." He looked at me so strangely before he gathered me in his arms. It felt like he was slightly shivering--or was it my imagination? "Drive safely, Scully." "I will," I said into his neck, while hugging him back. He felt like he didn't want to let me go. xxxxxxx 11:37pm "You're home safe and sound, Scully?" "Yes. Wait. How'd you know--don't answer that! Yes, Dad, I made it home in one piece!" "And you're sure you're alright?" "I'm refreshed, Mulder. I think that nap did me some good. My headache was gone when I woke up." "Glad to hear it." "You looked really worried after I woke up." "It's nothing. My mind just started taking me places I shouldn't go, that's all." "Places that neither one of us wants to go to ever again. I'm not sick, Mulder." "I know--just my mind working overtime." "If that's all, Mulder, I need to get my beauty sleep." "Yeah, and in case you get a headache, take two aspirin and call me in the morning! G'night, Scully." "'Night, Mulder." To Be Continued... The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART FOUR: THE STAKEOUT & A SEPARATION XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX J. EDGAR HOOVER FBI BUILDING WASHINGTON, DC X-FILES OFFICE 7:35am I woke up with a very uneasy feeling this morning. Hope Scully had a better night than I did. Decided to take a long run, then came to the office early. I've been sitting here for the last hour and a half, thinking about the last two days. Scully and I shared some heavy stuff between us, but what does it all mean? I was just trying to sort it all out, when I heard the familiar footsteps coming out of the elevator... "Scully, you're late." "So--what of it? Don't get me started this morning, Mulder. I'm in no mood!" "OK, you don't have to bite my head off!" "I need coffee..." I knew this was going to be a bad day! Scully came back into the office, with coffee cup in hand, and she did not look happy. "Scully, what's the matter?" "What's the matter? Oh, that's a good one, Mulder. This coffee is stone cold!" "Sorry, Scully, I must've turned the pot off by mistake. I can go out and get you some, if you'd like..." "No thanks. I should've stayed home. This day is not going right at all." "Care to share your story with the rest of the class?" "No! OK. The reason I'm late is because I forgot to reset my alarm clock, and if that wasn't enough, the last pair of pantyhose I had got a huge run in it the minute I put them on. The traffic was crappy, and some jerk cut me off..." "Whoa, Scully--I just wanted the Reader's Digest version-- not your whole life story!" "Then why did you ask, if you didn't want to hear about my lousy day? Don't answer that! So, what's on the agenda today, Mulder? Cattle mutilations? Giant, scum-sucking worms from outer space?" "Nothing like that. I don't know what's up today. Skinner called a few minutes ago. He wants to see us ASAP." "Well, at least I know it won't have anything to do with big piles of manure. We'd better go--can't keep the Assistant Director waiting..." xxxxxxx OFFICE OF ASSISTANT DIRECTOR WALTER S. SKINNER 7:59am His secretary told us to go in, so we did. I was really starting to get worried, but Mulder seemed totally unfazed by the whole situation. "Agents, please have a seat." "You wanted to see us, sir? Agent Mulder and I..." "Are not in any trouble. It's just that I need to see your field report from the last case you were working on. I have a new assignment for you, but it's not X-File related. Some of the agents in Violent Crimes are out sick, and they could really use your help on those latest bank heists. I need you two to work a stakeout, if you don't mind." "We'll get right on it, sir. That field report will be on your desk by close of business today. Is that all, sir?" "Yes, Agents--you're dismissed." Mulder didn't say one word while we were there. Unfortunately, I couldn't read his face in Skinner's office. Was he excited, or bored half out of his mind? He didn't speak until we got back down to the office. "Well, that was interesting!" "Interesting *good*--or interesting *bad*?" "I don't know, Scully. I'll let you know when I find out myself..." And with that, he sat down to finish the report. I better recheck my notes. There were still some discrepancies about the case that I had to run by Mulder before he finished... xxxxxxx At 9:30, with completed field report in hand, we left it with Skinner's secretary and went to the Violent Crimes Section for our assignment. After a brief visit with the SAC, we were told to go home and get changed into casual clothes for our stakeout, which would start promptly at 8:30pm. Mulder said he'd pick me up at my place at 7:30. "Okay, Mulder. Try to get a nap in. It's going to be a long night." "I'll try. See ya later, Scully." "Yeah, later Mulder." xxxxxxx SCULLY'S APARTMENT 7:25pm "Scully, it's me." "Hold on a second--dammit!" I didn't wait another second; I used my key and let myself in. "Scully, are you alright?" "Yeah, I'm fine. Just broke a glass, that's all." Her voice was coming from the bedroom. "Are you decent?" "Yeah, you can come in. I was putting my jeans on in the bathroom, and I kicked a glass off the sink by accident." "You didn't cut yourself, did you?" "No, the glass broke in three pieces, but I came out unscathed. Now these are the same jeans I wore Saturday night at our dinner, and I could swear they've gotten tighter in two days." "You wear them well, Scully." "Only a guy would say that. If you only knew the trouble I had getting into them! I'm not really into the casual thing." "You should try it more often, Scully. It looks good on you." "You're just saying that because you're my partner." "No, Scully, you really should. I like it. Wait, I got a present for ya!" I went back into the living room to get it, and brought it to her. "You can't complete the ensemble without this--tada! Do you like?" "Mulder, you've got to be kidding me! A New York Yankees baseball cap?" "Why not? What better way to celebrate their World Series victory? They're going all the way again this year, too." "Okay, Mulder. But I'm letting you know right now--I'm doing this only for you..." I do it all for you, Mulder... xxxxxxx "Mulder? Earth to Mulder--are you in there?" I waved my hands in front of his face. "Mulder, where were you?" "Nowhere. Everywhere. It doesn't matter; we'd better get going!" "Okay, but maybe you'd better let me drive." "No, it's alright. I'm fine." "Hey, that's my line!" We drove to the meeting point in silence. He put his own Yankees cap on before we met up with the SAC. We then drove again to a seedy neighborhood on the outskirts of town, where our would-be bank robbers had reportedly been spotted for the last couple of days. After two and a half hours, Mulder suggested I get some sleep. I told him no. "I'm not sleepy, Mulder. I took a nap at home--didn't you?" "No." "Why not?" "Wasn't tired." "Oh, Mulder, what am I gonna do with you..." xxxxxxx There she goes with that sexy voice again. I really can't be hearing that right now... "Hey, Scully, why don't you get us something to drink? I saw a store two blocks back. I'm pretty sure they stay open late." "Sure. What would you like?" "Iced tea." Her head snapped back, and she looked at me with a strange expression. Then she got out of the car, walking towards the store. Okay, Mulder--why'd you go and say that? I know what Scully was thinking. I could see it in her eyes... xxxxxxx "Sorry, Mulder. No iced tea. And no root beer, for that matter." "How's about a little good ole H20? "Water's fine, Scully. Get in the car quick! I think I saw something. Someone just moved past that window." "Yeah, I see it, Mulder." We didn't see anything more for a few minutes. Then someone came running out of the building. The man looked right in our direction. He spotted us. "Damn--we've been made! Scully, tell the SAC the deal's gone sour!" The man yelled up to the window, "It's the police!" Then another man came to the window, opened it, and started shooting. We ducked quickly, as the windshield glass exploded into a million pieces around us. I picked up the walkie-talkie and told the SAC the bad news. "I'm okay, Mulder. Should we go after them, before they get away?" "I don't know, Scully. Are you alright?" "I'm *fine*! That's them now--let's go!" The two men got in a car and peeled away in the opposite direction from us. We put our seatbelts on, and Mulder turned the car around. We weaved in and out of the city streets, running the red lights, trying to keep up with them. "Can't this thing go any faster?" "I don't know what's wrong, Scully. Oh sh--" "What is it?" The car came to a complete stop. "I hate to say this, Scully--but we're out of gas." "What? You've got to be kidding me! How can we be out of gas?" "I don't know, Scully. This is the car the SAC assigned to us." "This is great, Mulder. Our suspects are getting away!" "I know, but what can we do now?" "Nothing now. Guess we should go back to the meeting point, try to explain what happened, and pray we still have a job tomorrow." xxxxxxx Scully was fuming all the way back to the meeting point. The SAC picked us up, and he was not pleased. He told us that we were to go to headquarters ASAP. Skinner wanted to see us in one hour. It's over now--he is gonna have our asses. Scully looked like she wanted to kill me with her bare hands... xxxxxxx SKINNER'S OFFICE 1:17am "Agents--have a seat. I'll make this brief. What the hell happened out there?" We both spoke at the same time. "The car ran out of gas, sir." "You've got to be kidding me! Mulder--you were driving, right?" "Yes, sir. I can't explain it..." "I can explain it, sir. He was too *stupid* to check the gas tank before we went out!" "Hey, I take offense to that, Scully! I didn't see you checking the gas tank!" "That's because I wasn't driving! And why is that, Mulder? Why do you *always* have to drive?" "Now you know that is *not* true, Scully. You've driven lots of times!" "Yeah, just not on a stakeout, right?" "Scully..." "Mulder..." xxxxxxx By now, the Assistant Director had had enough. So he shut us up... "Agents!" We spoke at the same time again. "Yes, sir?" "I've had just about enough of this petty bickering! At this point, I really don't care what happened. The stakeout is a bust, and the SAC says he never wants to work with you two ever again! I don't know if I want you two to work for me right now..." "But sir, this is not my fault. It's Agent Mulder's." "Oh, so now it's *my* fault! Scully, you are..." "That's enough, Agents! As of this moment, the both of you are on annual leave for four weeks. Enjoy your vacation Agents! Dismissed--I don't want to see you again until your vacation is over." "But sir, this is not my fault; Agent Mulder..." "Sir, why are you punishing Agent Scully and myself for a simple mistake..." Skinner didn't say another word. His facial expression said it all. He was not happy. We left the office, and went our separate ways to head home. Somebody wake me up from this nightmare! Mulder didn't even look at me once... xxxxxxx Scully was very angry. I was waiting for her to let me have it once we left Skinner's office, but she didn't say anything. She just walked away from me, and left for home. I can't believe what just happened! Someone pinch me and tell me it was all a dream... xxxxxxx MULDER'S APARTMENT 10:13am "Mulder, it's me." "Scully, why are you here?" "We need to talk." "About last night? I'd rather forget the whole thing, if you don't mind." "Okay--I would too, but we need to clear up a few things, don't you think?" "I guess so. I'm sorry about what I said last night, Scully." "That's OK. We both said some things in the heat of the moment. I'm sorry too, Mulder." xxxxxxx We sat down on the couch, and I faced him. He probably wasn't going to like what I was about to say, but I had to say it... "So, Mulder--what are your plans?" "Plans? Oh, you mean for our *forced* vacation? I don't know. How 'bout yourself?" "I don't know, Mulder. Maybe go out of town somewhere..." "Where?" "I don't know yet, but I've got a lot of time on my hands to figure that out. Listen to me, Mulder--you're not going to like it, but I have to say this. After what happened last night, I went home and did a lot of thinking. And I've come to the conclusion that our partnership has become stale lately, and the only way to solve this dilemma is to put some distance between us." "Some distance?" "Yes, Mulder--some distance. It'll be good for us. We'll come back to the office in a month's time, and the fiasco last night will be a distant memory. It'll be a funny story you can tell your grandkids in twenty years." xxxxxxx <*Our* grandkids, Scully. I wish...> "Mulder? Are you still with me?" "Yes, Scully, I'm still here. I don't like your idea, but I'll go along with it." She grabbed my hands. "I'm gonna go now, Mulder, and let you think about all this." I walked Scully over to the door. "Distance, Mulder. So, that means don't call me; don't write me. If this is going to work, we have to have no contact with each other." "Okay, Scully--deal. Shake on it?" "Sure." xxxxxxx Our hands came together, and Mulder looked at me with the saddest expression. I pulled him into my arms. Just one more touch before I go... "Goodbye, Mulder." "Goodbye, Scully. I'll..." "What is it?" "It's nothing. Enjoy your vacation." "You too." xxxxxxx She kissed me on the cheek, and she was gone. I couldn't say it out loud, but I'll miss her... xxxxxxx I felt shaky when I got into my car. I knew what Mulder was going to say. I'll miss you, too... To Be Continued... The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART FIVE: A VACATION? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' VACATION! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~WEEK ONE~ MULDER'S APARTMENT TUESDAY 8:37am Day One of my vacation, and I'm bored out of my mind! What the hell am I gonna do for four weeks? Scully said she would go out of town. Maybe I should do that too--but where? Face it, Mulder--you are not a vacation type of guy. I know what--I'll go for a run and think about it. I *cannot* stay in this apartment for a month... xxxxxxx SCULLY'S APARTMENT 1:13pm Day One of my vacation--why am I not happy? You know why, Dana--it's because you have no clue about what to do for the next month. But I do know that I won't be sitting in front of this television watching The Jerry Springer Show, soap operas, and endless court shows! Come on--think! Where can you go? I know--I'll call my mother... "Dana, I'm so glad to see you!" "Hi, Mom!" "Is there something wrong? You sounded so sad on the phone!" "No, Mom--nothing's wrong. I just really wanted to see you today, that's all." "Well, come on in. I just finished lunch. Would you like something to eat?" "No, Mom, I'm not hungry." "Dana, you've got to tell me what's bothering you--and don't tell me it's nothing!" "It's nothing serious. It's just that I've been forced to take some time off from work, and I have no idea what to do!" "What about a cruise? You always said you'd like to take one." "A cruise doesn't really sound good right now. I wonder what Mulder will be doing..." As soon as I said that, I knew I was going to get a lecture from her. "How is Fox, honey? I haven't seen him in such a long time." "*Mulder*, Mother. And he's doing fine." "Glad to hear it. So, I assume that you both are on vacation at the same time?" "Yes." "Well--that answers your question. You and Fox should go on vacation together!" "Mother!" "What? Don't give me that look, Dana. I'm tired of the two of you playing games. You're both adults, so start acting like it, and not schoolchildren!" "I don't know what you mean, Mom." "Sweetheart, I know how Fox feels about you, and I know you feel the same way about him. Is it the FBI--is that why you won't admit your feelings for each other?" "Mom, Mulder and I are friends! That's all. I don't know what you're trying to imply. That we have a relationship that's more than friendly--it's absurd!" "You can keep on fooling yourself, Dana, but I know better. I'm your mother, and a mother knows these things..." And on it went, back and forth. No matter how hard I tried to explain to her that Mulder and I are just friends, who happen to work well together, and like each other's company...hell, its no use. I'm not going to win this argument. So I changed the subject, and asked about Bill, Charlie, and my nephew, Matthew. The rest of the day went smoothly, with no mention of Mulder. Mom showed me the newest pictures of Matthew that Bill and Tara had sent her. He's gotten so big! I got a lump in my throat looking at his birthday picture. He had cake smeared all over his face. Mom just squeezed my hand. She knew what I was thinking. I had to get out of there-- the walls were closing in on me. I said my goodbyes, and promised to call her in a few days. I held my breath until I got to the car. No, Dana--you are not going to cry... xxxxxxx After my run, I decided to go see the guys. I had been putting it off for quite awhile. I promised them two weeks ago that I would see them. "So, Mulder--where is the *delicious* Agent Scully?" "Hopefully on a sandy beach somewhere, Frohike." "A sandy beach--do tell!" "We've been forced to take some vacation time." Langly said, "That's a laugh--Mulder on vacation! I can see Agent Scully--but you?" Then Byers chimed in: "Mulder, you seem kind of down. You alright?" "I'll be alright when I can figure out what to do." Then the guys proceeded to show me the latest issue of The Lone Gunman, to try and cheer me up. It didn't work. "Hey, Mulder--we're going out for cheesesteaks later on. Want to come with us?" "No, Langly--think I'll pass. I'm going home. I'll talk to you guys later." Once I got home, I felt the walls closing in on me. I turned on the TV, just in time for the Knicks game, but even that couldn't hold my interest. So I decided to go out for another run. That didn't help. I came back home, ordered a pizza, and tried to watch one of my films that Scully is always teasing me about. Fox buddy, you have got to do something, and fast! xxxxxxx SCULLY'S APARTMENT WEDNESDAY 8:05am Decided to start calling travel agencies to maybe get an idea of where I could go. Didn't have much luck--none of the places they mentioned I was interested in. I'll think of someplace, before it kills me! Sure hope Mulder's having more fun than I am... xxxxxxx MULDER'S APARTMENT 1:55pm Still had no idea of where to go, so I decided to go to the gym for a little b-ball. Had a great time--my team was up 10 points, but I couldn't help thinking about a little over a year ago... Hey, homegirl! Word up! Mulder, it's my distinct impression that you just cheated. And that you're not coming in again. Oh, Scully! I got game! Yeah, you got so much game that I'm worried if you've got any work left in you. I'm ready to j-o-b. Just not on some jag-off shoe-shine tip... Wow, Scully looked great that day--pretty damn fine, in fact. It must've been that skirt! Then it hit me like a ton of bricks--why didn't I think of it before? I went home and called the airline I used back then. If my luck is good, I can be there in the next twelve hours. Graceland, here I come! Long live The King! MEMPHIS, TN 11:26pm Made it here in record time. Checked into a motel, but I was too excited to sleep. I started to think about the last time I was here. Ironically, I suggested to Scully that we needed some distance from each other back then. I still don't understand what the big deal was with the desk thing, and I don't think I ever will. That's all in the past, Mulder--why don't we leave it there... xxxxxxx THURSDAY 9:59am East coast or West? I still can't decide! California, New York, Las Vegas? Dana, make up your mind already! Why is this so hard? Because, you're making it hard for yourself, when this should be one of the easiest decisions of your life! Just think--where can I go? I thought about the cases Mulder and I worked on in the last few months, and then it hit me. The Henry Weems case! See Dana, that wasn't so hard... xxxxxxx 3:23pm Having a great time here. I wonder if Scully would like coming to Graceland one day? Nah. Met folks from all across the country, and around the world, for that matter. I'll have to get some souvenirs for Scully--the cheesier, the better... xxxxxxx FRIDAY 2:07pm Couldn't get a flight out until later tonight. Got a good rate on a great hotel with a view of the lakefront. I'm gonna do some serious sightseeing. Maybe I'll visit the Sears Tower first... xxxxxxx 7:16pm I had planned on staying through the weekend, but my enthusiasm was short-lived. I booked a flight back to DC early Saturday morning. Sure hope Scully's having a better vacation than I am... xxxxxxx O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CHICAGO, IL SATURDAY 1:03am I finally made it! I'm really excited. Can't wait to check into my hotel. I hailed a taxi, and then I was on my way. I was enjoying the view, so I almost missed the driver asking me if it was my first time here. I answered his questions, and went back to looking out the window. Suddenly, it started to rain--a downpour, actually. This is not going to ruin it for me my first day here. I feel too good to let this get me down! With it being so early in the morning, traffic was light. The driver told me we were about ten minutes away from the hotel. We got the light, and the driver proceeded to make a right turn, when all of a sudden, a car comes out of nowhere! I knew we wouldn't be able to stop. Everything happened like it was in slow motion. It only took a few seconds, and I tried to brace myself for the impact. The streets were slippery, so that didn't help much. The last thing I remember was the other car's headlights practically blinding me. I put my hand up to block it, then everything went black... xxxxxxx MULDER'S APARTMENT 6:34am Finally made it back home. I was ready to hit the sheets. Guess jet lag caught up with me. I was going to unpack, but I saw my answering machine blinking at me, so I decided to check my messages. The first one was from the gunmen, nothing really important, so I went into the bedroom to start unpacking. When I heard the second message, I couldn't believe my ears, so I ran back into the living room to hear it again. Tell me I didn't just hear that! "Agent Fox Mulder? This is Dr. Saunders with the Rush- Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. I'm afraid your partner, Dana Scully, has been in a very bad accident. According to her ID, you are the person to contact in case of an emergency..." Scully's been hurt! I can't believe it! The doctor was so vague--he didn't leave any details on Scully's condition. She could be dying. She could be de--NO! Don't say it, Mulder--she's okay! I wrote down the address of the hospital, and called the airport for the earliest flight to Chicago. Unfortunately, all flights were booked solid until 5:30 this afternoon. I sat down on my couch, trying not to go totally crazy. I can't *possibly* wait 11 hours until the next available flight out of DC! Scully needs me... To Be Continued... The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART SIX: I'D GIVE UP FOREVER TO TOUCH YOU... XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX MULDER'S APARTMENT 7:05am So here I am, sitting on my couch, with my head in my hands. I can't stick around here--I've got to *do* something! I went into my bedroom, checked my bags, and added a few more things. Don't know how long Scully's going to be in the hospital. I was really tired, and wanted nothing more than to go to sleep, but I forced myself to stay awake. I went to the bathroom, and splashed some cold water on my face. I looked terrible! I decided to shave, to get my mind off things. Not that Scully lying in a hospital bed hundreds of miles away from me was ever far from my mind. I turned on the radio, and tried to zone out for a few minutes while I shaved. After about five minutes, a song came on that I really liked, so I turned up the volume to the highest setting. I didn't care if the neighbors could hear it--the lyrics were really important to me right now... And I'd give up forever to touch you 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be And I don't wanna go home right now... Right--I didn't wanna be home now, so I quickly finished, grabbed all my things, and headed for the airport. I'll wait it out there... xxxxxxx RUSH-PRESBYTERIAN-ST. LUKE'S MEDICAL CENTER 1750 W. HARRISON STREET CHICAGO, IL 7:39am I felt awful! I wanted to open my eyes, but I didn't dare. Every time I moved, a searing pain went through my entire body. Mulder would make the pain go away, so I called out his name. He didn't answer, but I heard a female voice instead... "Dana, it's alright. My name is Jennifer, and I'm your nurse. We called your partner, Agent Mulder. He wasn't home, but I'm sure he's heard the message your doctor left for him by now..." "I know you're in an awful lot of pain right now. I'm going to give you another dose of painkiller we have you on. Don't worry about Agent Mulder, Dana. He'll be here before you know it..." That's about all I heard, before I drifted off to sleep. xxxxxxx WASHINGTON, DC 8:23am I'm at the airport. I went to every airline there and told the clerks to page me the minute a flight to Chicago became available. I sat down in a chair, just twiddling my thumbs. Hopefully, I won't have to wait until 5:30 to get out of here. 11:49am I was getting stiff just sitting here, so I got up, and decided to walk around a bit. I went into a bookstore and picked up a copy of the Chicago Tribune newspaper. I went back to my seat and started to read it, front to back. Somehow, it made me feel closer to Scully. 2:03pm I finally got a page! I ran to the nearest courtesy phone, and picked it up. A flight leaving at 2:37 just became available--a passenger had to cancel. I'm outta here! xxxxxxx O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT 5:17pm Made it here, but now I'm a nervous wreck. I even had two drinks on the plane to calm me down, but they didn't help at all. Before I left, one of the flight attendants told me that they were holding Agent Scully's luggage. Somehow, they got forwarded back to the airport after her accident. Okay, Mulder, you don't really want to drag all these bags to the hospital, do you? So I checked into a nearby motel to figure out what to do... 6:20pm I sat in my room, just looking at Scully's luggage. She would need some clean clothes, so I started to go through her bags, to find something appropriate she could wear. I felt a little awkward, going through her things, but I had no choice. I got the clothes together with a pair of shoes, and stuffed them into her carry-all bag. OK, I'm ready now- -it's time to see Scully... xxxxxxx RUSH-PRESBYTERIAN-ST. LUKE'S MEDICAL CENTER 7:30pm I told the cabdriver to get me to the hospital as quickly as possible. He didn't even go over the speed limit, but it seems like we just flew here. Now I'm here, and I don't know what to do. Should I get Scully some flowers? I asked someone at the front desk for Dr. Saunders, and was told to go to the third floor. I took the elevator up, and the doctor met me as soon as the doors opened. "Agent Mulder? I'm Dr. Saunders." We shook hands. "How is she?" "Right now, she's resting comfortably." "Can you tell me what happened?" "Well, from the police report, she was in a car accident. Luckily, she was wearing her seatbelt, so that helped keep her injuries less severe." "But, is she alright?" "Yes, Mr. Mulder. Dana will be fine. She's got a mild concussion, a couple of broken ribs, and some minor cuts and bruises. Would you like to see her now?" "Yes, please!" "Right this way." We walked down to the other end of the hall. The doctor informed me that Scully was in the room to my right. I took a deep breath, and let myself in. She was asleep. There was a large bandage above her left eye. Her hands had scratches on them, and the pinky fingernail on her right hand was chipped. All her nails were painted purple. Her cross was around her neck, slightly going up and down, with each of her breaths. I held her left hand in mine, and looked at her, just thankful that I was here, and I could touch her. "Scully--can you hear me?" She must be in a really deep sleep. She would've felt me by now... "Agent Mulder?" I turned around to see who was disturbing me. It was a nurse. "I'm Jennifer; I'm Dana's nurse." We shook hands, and stepped outside Scully's room. "Has she been sleeping like this long?" "I'm afraid so. She's been in and out all day, but she's okay. We've got her on a pretty strong painkiller. She's been mumbling things in her sleep, but the only thing I could make out was your name." "My name?" "Yes, like 'Mulder, don't go,' or 'Mulder, please don't leave me.' Sounds pretty heavy to me. You two must be very close." "Yes. Y-y-yes, we are." "Well, I just wanted to touch base with you, and let you know that Dana will be fine. I'll let you go back and see her." "Thanks, Jennifer. Thanks for taking care of her." "No problem, Agent Mulder." I went back into Scully's room, pulled a chair towards her bed, and sat down. xxxxxxx 10:13pm I must've dozed off! Scully was still asleep. Come on, Scully--wake up! I want to see your eyes; then I'll know you're okay. I took her right hand and placed it on my chest. "Scully--you've got to wake up now. Time to come out of dreamland. I want to see those beautiful green eyes of yours. Don't make me wait any longer..." xxxxxxx 10:20pm I could see him, but he was too far away to touch. We were outside, and the sun was almost blinding me, blocking my view of him. I started to walk towards him, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't reach him. I held out my hand, and called out his name, but suddenly, he faded away... "Mul-derr..." I saw him jump out of his chair very quickly. "Scully--welcome back!" "Oooh, my head hurts!" "It should--your doctor tells me you've got a mild concussion." "Oh God, Mulder, please don't tell me I'm in the hospital?" "Yes, Scully, you are. I'm sorry, but I'm really glad to see you're alright." "Am I, Mulder?" He just looked at me with a goofy grin on his face, rubbing my right wrist with his thumb. I don't even think he knew he was consciously doing that. It felt really good, though. Gave me a tingle right down to my toes! "Mulder?" "Yeah, Scully?" "You can let go of my hand now!" "What if I don't want to?" "Alright, Mulder, but please sit down, so I don't have to keep looking up at you! My neck is killing me!" "Do you want an extra pillow?" "No, Mulder. I just want you to stay here with me, okay?" "I'm not going anywhere." xxxxxxx She wanted me to stay with her. Didn't she know wild horses couldn't keep me away? I asked her if she remembered anything. "Yes, Mulder. I was in a taxi, going to my hotel. It started to rain. Some car came out of nowhere and cut us off..." "Scully, are you alright?" "Yes. I keep seeing those headlights blinding me before the crash..." "OK--you don't have to tell me any more. I don't want you upset. Calm down. Just close your eyes, Scully, and go back to sleep." "You're right, Mulder. I'm so tired. I hope you weren't too worried about me, once you found out I was here." "No, Scully. I wasn't worried at all." That was a lie, of course. I got up out of the chair. A lump started to form in my throat. I didn't want Scully to see me like this. When I looked back at her, she was already snoozing. So I decided to step outside of her room for a few minutes, until I could get my emotions in check. I walked towards the window, and looked out. I watched the cars go by on the expressway. And then I let the tears fall. I couldn't hold them back any longer. How many times is this scenario going to play out? How many more times do I have to see Scully in the hospital? Duane Barry, her cancer, Cassandra Spender, Peyton Ritter--it's just too much, and I don't know if I can take any more. But I did know one thing. While we're here in Chicago, this relationship is going to change between us... SUNDAY 12:01am I went back inside Scully's room. She looked so peaceful in her bed. And she had a beautiful smile on her face, like she was dreaming. Must be some dream! I pulled my chair even closer to her bed. I held her right hand, and laid my head down next to her stomach. I closed my eyes, and just listened to her breathing. After a few minutes, I was just as soundly asleep as Scully was... To Be Continued... The song that I quoted in this part of the story is "Iris", by the Goo Goo Dolls. The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART SEVEN: JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES...IT FEELS BETTER THAT WAY XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~WEEK ONE~ RUSH-PRESBYTERIAN-ST. LUKE'S MEDICAL CENTER SUNDAY 4:35am That song was playing--always in the dream, that song. I never want to hear "Don't Look Any Further" ever again. Donnie Pfaster had me tied up, and was now in my bathroom, invading my home, doing who knows what. If I could only get to my gun--I'd blow that son-of-a-bitch away... And then I woke up. "Oh!" I grabbed my chest; I was having trouble catching my breath. I sat straight up, but I must've done that too quickly. A pain just went through every part of my head. And then I noticed Mulder's head by my side. What was he still doing here? It's almost 5am! "Mulder!" I ruffled his hair, and he woke up immediately. "Scully--what is it?" "Nothing--just a bad dream." "About?" "It doesn't matter." He sat straight up, and gave me an inquisitive look. "Scully--you don't look so great. Are you alright?" "I'm fine, Mulder." "Don't give me that, Scully. You're not *fine*! What is it?" "I'm o-o-okay. Let's just drop this." "I'm not going to drop it until you tell me what's bothering you! What was the dream about?" I really didn't care to discuss it, so I fiddled with the bed sheets, just twisting them between my fingers. I wasn't going to let her off the hook so easily. I had an idea of what her dream was about. But I wanted her to say it out loud. We can't get through this if we don't talk about it. She was avoiding my eyes--doing anything not to look at me. Didn't she know that whatever it is, we can get through it together much better than we ever can apart? I took two of my fingers, and tilted her face up to meet mine. When she finally looked up at me, her eyes got huge... xxxxxxx He did the same thing five years ago. And with such a concerned look on his face back then too. I should know by now that I can't hide anything from him. He probably knows what this is all about, and wants me to acknowledge it out loud. "It was--it was...Donnie Pfaster. The same dream I've been having ever since I shot him, okay!" Her voice got really loud. I knew this was making her upset, so I gathered her in my arms, and tried to calm her down. "Shhh, Scully--it's okay. He can't hurt you anymore." "I know, Mulder. I just wish I would stop thinking about him..." xxxxxxx She was shivering. It had been awhile since she's had this dream. After the incident, I told her she could stay at my place, but she politely refused. She told me that 'that man' was not going to run her out of her own home. I knew there was going to be trouble, so I stayed up all night, waiting for that phone call... "Mulder, it's me." She was crying. "Scully, I'll be right there. Just hold tight. Look, I'm going to call you back on my cell phone when I get in the car, okay?" "Okay, Mulder. But please hurry up and get here." I clicked off, grabbed my car keys and phone, and was out the door. I ran down four flights of stairs, and to my car. I started the ignition, and pushed number one on my speed dial. Scully picked up immediately. She was almost hysterical. Yelling things at me--I could hardly make out anything she said. But I know Scully--she's totally independent, even during a crisis. I didn't push it, but I should have. I broke every speed limit known to man to make it here as quickly as possible. Since Scully called me at 2am, traffic wasn't a problem. In two more minutes, I would be a block away from her apartment. I told her to try to stay calm; I was just a few seconds away. "Okay--please hurry, Mulder." Such desperation in her voice! There was a space free right in front of her apartment, so I parked there, and practically flew out of the car. I used my key to let myself in. The place was dark. I heard Scully crying in her bedroom, and I ran to her. "Scully!" "Mulder! I'm so sorry. I thought I could handle this." I sat down on the bed, and held her. "Shhh, you have nothing to be sorry about. I don't ever want to hear you apologize to me about this." "Okay." She sniffled. "I thought I was strong enough, Mulder, but he's everywhere, and I don't know how to get rid of him!" "He's gone, Scully. He's not coming back." She grabbed my hands. "I don't know if I can forgive myself for what I've done." "Scully--you were well within your rights." "Was I? I killed a man, Mulder!" "I know. You shot the bastard. But you have to move past this." "I don't know if I can." "I'll help you get through this, Scully. I'll always be here..." xxxxxxx He held me again, just rubbing my back, and not saying anything. We sat like this for endless minutes in total silence. Until I broke it off myself... "I must look awful! I'm going to clean my face, okay?" "Sure." xxxxxxx She jumped out of bed, and padded to her bathroom. I decided to make myself useful, so I went to the kitchen, and put the kettle on. Tea would be very good for Scully right now. When she came out of the bathroom and didn't see me, I guess she panicked. She ran into the living room, and screamed my name. "It's okay, Scully. I'm still here. I thought I'd make us some tea." "I don't know what I was thinking. I know you wouldn't leave me, but I guess I panicked." I walked towards her, and put my hands on her shoulders. "Come sit down, before you fall down. That's an order!" I grabbed her hand, and led her to the kitchen table, where we waited for the kettle to whistle. When it finally did, Scully jumped up so fast, her chair fell over. She really was a nervous wreck! "I'm okay, Mulder. I'll make the tea. Chamomile sound good?" "Yes." She made the tea, and handed me a cup. I watched her take a big gulp. "You feel better now?" "Much, thanks. Thanks so much for coming over here. I don't know what I would've done without you." She grasped my hand. "Glad I could help. But you've got to promise me that if you have trouble with this again, you'll tell me. Promise?" "I promise, Mulder." After our tea was finished, Scully said she was really tired, and wanted to go back to sleep. But she wouldn't in her bed, so she decided to sleep on the couch. "You don't have to go, Mulder. You can sleep in my bed." "No, Scully, I couldn't. I'll just wait until you fall asleep, then I'll go home." She was going to say something else, but she decided against it. She went to the couch, grabbed the blanket, and lay down. I sat down in a chair, and watched her close her eyes. "Goodnight, Mulder." "'Night, Scully." In less than five minutes, she was asleep. I didn't have the heart to leave her, so I stayed by her side, and watched her sleep the rest of the night. When morning finally came, I called Skinner and told him we'd be taking a couple of personal days. He understood, so he didn't push it. In fact, he told us to take a whole week, if necessary. When Scully woke up, she was surprised to see me. "Mulder--why are you still here?" "I didn't want to leave you alone all night." "You didn't sleep in my bed, did you?" "Nope. Didn't want to mess up your sheets." "Mulderr..." "Go get dressed. I'll make you breakfast." "Oh, this should be special. Dear Diary: Today my heart leapt when Agent Mulder made me breakfast!" She looked at me, giggled, and went to get changed. Wow, she's in a great mood this morning! I'm glad to see it. After breakfast, I told her about my conversation with Skinner. "Great, Mulder. 'Cause I've decided to see my mother today. I need to tell her what happened. I should've called her yesterday..." "Hey--don't beat yourself up about it. I'll take you over there, if you don't mind." "Why would I mind? Of course you can take me, Mulder. Besides, Mom would love to see you." "No, Scully. This is a day just for the two of you. I'd only get in the way." She looked disappointed, but she didn't say anything. I drove her to her mother's and told her to call me when she was ready to leave. I went to a nearby park, sat on a bench, and watched the children playing. I thought about Scully and I playing with a little boy or girl, and suddenly, I had a clear image of Emily in Scully's arms, both of them with big smiles on their faces. They were smiling at me. I shook the thought from my mind. This is not the time, Mulder... My phone rang. It was Scully, of course. I don't know where the time went. Two hours just flew by. I picked her up, and drove her home. I went home after that. But I called Scully later, and told her I was coming over with pizza and beer. We had a great time. I told her that I would stay with her again tonight. She seemed surprised. I wasn't going to risk a repeat of last night. And that's the way our routine went for the rest of the week. I slept on her couch, and calmed her down if she would have the dreams again... xxxxxxx She was still shivering. I whispered in her ear, "Everything is going to be okay." I rubbed her back. "Scully, are you listening to me?" "Yes, but I don't think it will ever be okay, Mulder." She put her arms around my neck, and buried her face in my chest. "He was pure evil, Mulder. I'd look into his eyes, and saw the devil himself there." "Don't say anymore, Scully." I kissed her on the forehead, and smoothed the hair away from her face. I don't think I've seen Scully this vulnerable since the incident happened. Then she hugged my neck a little tighter, and I grimaced. "Ooohhh..." "Sorry, Mulder. Guess I don't know my own strength." "It wasn't that--my neck and shoulders are stiff, that's all." "Then I'll rub your shoulders. Have a seat." I pulled the chair as close to the bed as it could go, and sat down with my back to her. She kneeled behind me on the bed, and her fingers began to slowly knead the kinks out of my shoulders. "Close your eyes, Mulder." "Why?" "Because--it feels better that way." I didn't want to argue with her, so I closed my eyes. "OK. They're closed." She didn't say anything else--just let her magic fingers do all the talking. "That was really great, Scully. You've got great hands." "Mulder, are you coming on to me?" She laughed. I gave her my best 'innocent' look. "Scout's honor, Scully." "Alright, but you've got to get out of here. It's almost six o'clock in the morning. It's a wonder you didn't get kicked out!" "I've got connections. They wouldn't dare throw me out of here. I came a long way to see you..." xxxxxxx He looked at me so intensely. It was almost as if he could see through to my soul. I grabbed Mulder's hand, and squeezed it. "Do you have someplace to stay?" "Yes, I got a motel room near the airport." "I want you to go back there and get some sleep--in a bed this time!" "Yes, Mom! You get some sleep too, and I'll be back later on today." xxxxxxx I squeezed her hand back, and left. I got a cab back to the motel. 6:45am I'm back in my room, looking at Scully's luggage again. Guess I'd better take it to her later today. But first, I'd better find out what hotel she's supposed to be staying in, and make sure they don't give her room away. After a few minutes, I found the information I was looking for, and called the hotel to check on her room. I was told it was still available, so I told them to hold it for a couple more days, until she gets out from the hospital. I asked if there were any other rooms free. Unfortunately for me, none were. That's when I came up with an idea, and I called a friend to help me out... "Lone Gunman--may I help you?" "Frohike? I need your help. I could really use your hacking expertise." "My kung fu is the best. Isn't it kind of early, Mulder?" "Don't you know the early bird gets the worm? I'm desperate here. I need you to get me a hotel room here in Chicago, Illinois." "City of Big Shoulders--what are you doing there?" "It's a long story, and I'd love to tell it to you sometime, but not now. I need a room on Scully's floor, preferably next door to hers." "Okay, shoot, Mulder. Give me some info..." Frohike called me back a half hour later. The guy was a genius. He didn't get me a room next door, but he did manage to get me the room directly across the hall from Scully. I promised him that film he's been bugging me about from my video collection. Now I can get some sleep... xxxxxxx RUSH-PRESBYTERIAN-ST. LUKE'S MEDICAL CENTER 12:07pm Mulder came back to see me. He told me that he had my luggage sent to my hotel. "But Mulder, how did you know what hotel I'd be staying at?" "I'm an FBI agent. I investigated. I told them to hold your room for a few more days, until you can get out of here." "Thanks, Mulder. I totally forgot about all that." "No problem." Just then, my nurse, Jennifer, came into the room with a wheelchair. "Okay, Dana, time for tests. Mr. Mulder--so nice to see you again." "You too, Jennifer. Hope these tests aren't serious!" "Not at all. Dr. Saunders just wants to do a follow-up on Dana." "Okay, I'd better go. I'll call you later, Scully." He left, and Jennifer helped me into the chair. "I've got a really stupid question to ask you, Dana." "What is it, Jennifer?" "Why do you and your partner call each other by your last names?" "We've always done that, ever since we were partnered together seven years ago. And, Mulder's not too partial to his first name, so going by last names is easier." "Yeah, I saw his name on your chart. His first name is *really* Fox?" "Yes, it is." "Wow--a great name, and not too bad to look at either!" I blushed. Sure was glad Jennifer couldn't see my face right now! "Seven years together. I don't know anyone who has even been married that long! Are you two involved, Dana? I don't mean to pry or anything!" "No--why do you ask?" "It's just the things you were saying early Saturday morning--mumbling Mulder's name in your sleep and all. I mentioned this to Agent Mulder when he first came to see you." "You did?" "Yes. I hope you don't mind." "No, n-n-no, I don't mind." "Well, here we are. Let me call Dr. Saunders, and tell him you're ready." Mumbling Mulder's name in my sleep? Hope I didn't embarrass myself. I met with Dr. Saunders, and all my tests came back negative. They just wanted to keep me under observation for a couple of days, because of the concussion. xxxxxxx ~WEEK TWO~ TUESDAY 6:15pm Mulder came to see me everyday in the hospital. I was really starting to get restless. I told Mulder I was sure glad to be getting released tomorrow. But he wasn't paying any attention to me. He was too busy watching the television screen! "Oh, look, Scully! It's 'James Bond Week' on TBS! They're showing Goldfinger at 7:05--wanna watch with me?" Wouldn't miss it for the world... "Sure, Mulder. I'll watch with you." "Great! I've got a few minutes left. I'll be back, Scully." "Where are you going?" "I've got to get snacks. You want some, don't you?" "I'll just share with you." "Okay, I'll be back before you know it!" Why is he so excited about a movie I'm pretty sure he's seen a hundred times? xxxxxxx He came back promptly at 7pm--five minutes to go. He had a jumbo bag of microwave buttered popcorn, and one beer. "Mulder! You snuck a beer into the hospital?" "Yeah, I was thirsty. Want some?" "Think I'll pass on that, but I'll have a little of the popcorn." He handed the bag to me, and the movie started. I took a couple of handfuls, and gave the bag back to him. "I'm done, Mulder. Not that hungry." "OK--more for me!" And he munched away. He sat back in his chair, and turned the volume up. I hadn't seen this one in a while. I was watching it, trying to remember the plot, when my left foot got a serious cramp in it. I tried to rub it out, but it was no use. The pain started to go straight to my leg. By then, the theme song started to play, so I decided to sing it to myself, to get my mind off the prickly sensations. Shirley Bassey definitely sings it better than I... Goldfinger/He's the man/The man with the Midas touch/A spider's touch/Such a cold finger/Beckons you to enter his web of sin/But don't go in/Golden words he will pour in your ear/But his lies can't disguise what you fear/For a Golden girl/Knows when he's kissed her/It's the kiss of death/From Mr. Goldfinger... That wasn't working, so I decided to stand up. That was a mistake--I promptly fell on my butt! "Oof!" xxxxxxx I looked up and saw Scully wasn't on the bed anymore. I ran to the other side of the bed to find her on the floor, clutching her left foot. "Scully, what's the..." "My foot just gave out on me. I've got a cramp--ooh!" "Your left foot?" "Yes. I couldn't shake it. Help me up, will you?" "No, stay there. I'll pick you up." "But, Mulder..." xxxxxxx I didn't have time to finish my sentence. Mulder scooped me up, gently placed me back in bed, and sat down next to me. "Does it still hurt?" "Yes. The pain keeps shooting up my leg--aahh!" "Close your eyes, Scully." "What?" "Close your eyes. I'll rub your foot for you. It'll feel better if you close your eyes." I smiled at him, and closed my eyes. xxxxxxx I pushed the gown up her left leg. Somehow, they never seem to have one that will fit Scully's small frame. I ran my hands down her well-toned calf, and to her ankle. I started a circular motion on her foot. Scully inhaled, and bit her lip. Her face scrunched up, but she slowly started to relax. I'm glad she had her eyes closed, so I could enjoy all her facial expressions. They were really quite extraordinary... "Mulder?" "Yes?" "You've got great hands." She opened her eyes and winked at me. The movie was on a commercial now. I needed a break so I excused myself to go to the men's room. When I got back, Scully was asleep. I covered her up, and turned the volume down on the TV. She's being discharged tomorrow, but is it too soon? I decided to call her doctor and find out... To Be Continued... The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART EIGHT: SURPRISE! THE VACATION BEGINS... XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~WEEK TWO~ RUSH-PRESBYTERIAN-ST. LUKE'S MEDICAL CENTER WEDNESDAY 9:27am I called Scully's doctor earlier this morning. He saw me right before he started rounds, and told me that she would be fine. He would be leaving a prescription for a milder painkiller than the one she was on now. While I pondered that for a couple of hours, I finally saw Scully being wheeled out of her room by Jennifer. "Hey, Scully!" "Mulder, what are you doing here?" "I wasn't going to let you get discharged without me." "Mulder, you don't have to do this. I'm fine now. I'm finally going to get out of here and start my vacation! You should be doing the same." "I know--that's what I wanted..." "Give me a minute, Mulder. Meet me by the elevator, okay?" I could only nod at her as I walked down the hallway towards the elevators. xxxxxxx "Jennifer, thank you so much for taking care of me." "No problem, Dana. Just doing what they pay me to do. But, can I give you a little friendly advice--woman to woman?" "Sure, what is it?" "Take care of that sexy partner of yours, okay? A guy like him is hard to find!" "Of course I'll take care of him. That's what partners do." "I think you know what I mean, Dana!" "I know what you mean, but my relationship with Mulder isn't like that." "OK, Dana--but you don't know what you're missing!" She wheeled me towards the elevators, where I found Mulder, nervously chewing sunflower seeds. xxxxxxx "I think I can take it from here, Jennifer. Don't you think?" I winked at her. "Why yes, Agent Mulder. I do believe you can. You two both take care." As I was pushing the button to go down, Jennifer lightly touched my arm, and whispered to me, "Take care of her. I think she needs it." She returned the wink, and the elevator doors closed behind us. xxxxxxx Mulder had a cab waiting for me at the entrance. "OK, Scully, ready to get out of here?" "Definitely!" He helped me into the cab, and we were on our way. I asked him what his plans were. "They're kind of in the air at the moment." "In the air?" "Yes, but I'll be sure in a couple of hours or so." "So, you're just waiting for confirmation?" "Yeah, you could say that." He didn't say anything else. He sure had a goofy look on his face. What is going on with him? xxxxxxx SHERATON CHICAGO HOTEL & TOWERS 301 E. NORTH WATER STREET 10:02am I got Scully up to her room. She was too busy enjoying the sights, to really pay any attention to me. "Wow, Mulder, the brochures didn't do it justice...this place is amazing!" "Here we are--room 1735." "What? Oh, my room. You want to come in?" She opened the door. "Maybe later. You've got lots of unpacking to do! So, I'll leave you to it, and I will call you around 12:30, okay?" "Okay, Mulder, but..." xxxxxxx He shut the door, and left. What did he mean, he'll call me at 12:30? xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 12:29pm I just cooled my heels in my room, waiting. I had everything ready. This being such a top-notch hotel, all I had to do was make a call to the concierge, and he had it all provided. I just hope Scully doesn't kill me... "Hello?" "Scully, it's me." "Mulder, you still here?" "Yeah, I said I'd call you at 12:30. Don't you remember?" "Yes, Mulder, I do, but..." "Go open your door." "What?" "Humor me. Just go open your door, alright?" "OK, but I still don't know what's going on here!" She put the receiver down. I did too, and ran to my door. When Scully saw me on the other side, she did seem surprised--or was that shock? "Surprise!" "Mulder, what are you doing in that room?" "Since it's my room, where else would I be?" "Your room?" "Is there an echo in here? Yes, Scully, it's my room. I wasn't going to let you spend time in the Windy City by yourself after your accident. So, I volunteered myself to look after you!" "Mulder! I'm not a kid! I can take care of myself." "I know that, Scully, but I didn't have any other place to go, so..." "So, the confirmation you were waiting for was me?" "Yes. Don't be mad, Scully!" "I'm not. This is a lot to take in. How did you manage to get a room across the hall from mine?" "Your *favorite* lone gunman." "Frohike? I'm surprised that he helped you out!" "Me too, but I owe him something when we get back to DC." "And what would that be?" "Let's just say that you wouldn't like it." "Say no more! How long have you had this room?" "Since Sunday." "That long! Enjoy the view?" "Yeah, come look!" "Wait a sec--let me get my keycard, so I don't get locked out of *my* room!" She went to grab her keycard, and I escorted her into my room. All this time, and I just noticed her hair was wet, and she was wearing a robe. It was starting to fall off her left shoulder. I wanted to push it back up, but I'm going to be a good boy. "Nice, Mulder. It looks just like my room. But I've got the better view. You've got the Chicago River, while I've got Lake Michigan! Guess you should've gotten a room next to mine instead." I grabbed her hand. "C'mon, you gotta get dressed." "For what?" "It's a surprise. Wear something casual, okay?" "OK, but you're not going to tell me what it is, are you?" "Nope." "Want to come in?" "Sure, got to see your *great* view." "I didn't mean to make it sound so bad--your view of the river, I mean." She let me in. "Here we are!" "You're right--it is a great view. But you can't see Tribune Tower or the Wrigley Building from here!" "OK--truce, Mulder. I've got some casual things to wear, so that shouldn't be a problem. Do you mind if I call my mother first? I was about to do that before you called me." "Of course not. Say hi for me." She finally pulled the robe back on her shoulder before she went to the bedroom. I wondered how long it was going to take before she did that... "I'll just be a minute. Have a seat, and make yourself comfortable!" xxxxxxx Mulder. He's always got something up his sleeve. Better call my mother, and get this over with... "Hi, Mom!" "Dana! How's your vacation?" "Technically, it's just getting started today." "I don't understand." "Well, I had a little accident when I got to Chicago Saturday morning." "What kind of accident?" "A car accident--but before you start to worry, I'm fine. Mulder's here with me, and--" "Fox is there with you in Chicago? That's wonderful news, Dana! I'm so happy for the both of you! I know he'll take good care of you..." "Mom! How many times do I have to tell you! There is nothing going on..." "I know, sweetie, but I'm not listening to you. You two have a great time in Chicago, and you can tell me all about it when you get back. 'Bye! Love you!" She hung up on me. I left the bedroom to tell Mulder it would be a few more minutes. "Give me a half hour, Mulder." "No rush, Scully. Take your time. I'll leave now. Just meet me downstairs in the lobby, when you're ready." He left. I've got to find my hair dryer... xxxxxxx 1:20pm I met Mulder in the lobby. When we got to the door, he told me to close my eyes. "Why?" "For your surprise." "OK, but how many more surprises am I going to get today?" "I see another one in your future--but you have to close your eyes for this one first. You look really nice, Scully." "Thanks, Mulder. How long do I have to wait?" "Just a minute--and no peeking!" "I'm not!" xxxxxxx I led her out the door, and told her to stand where she was. I ran down the street, and got in. I pulled right in front of Scully, and honked. "Open your eyes, Scully!" "A red convertible? Is there something you're not telling me? You suffering from a mid-life crisis?" "No, but I will be 39 this year--I'm not getting any younger. Wait! Let me open the door for you." xxxxxxx He got out, and opened my door. "Don't you know that everything gets better with age, Mulder?" "Thank you for saying that--I think." "So, Mulder, where are we going?" "It's a sur--you'll find out when we get there. Just thought you might like some fresh air, that's all." We drove for a few minutes, and he parked the car in a lot. We got out of the car, Mulder went to the trunk, and pulled out a picnic basket and blanket. "You hungry, Scully?" "Starved--I didn't even have breakfast at the hospital. Somehow, you don't seem the picnic type, Mulder." "Oh, and what kind of *type* do you think I am?" "Oh, I don't know..." We walked two blocks, and Mulder led me to the entrance of a park. MILTON L. OLIVE III PARK 1:45pm He led me through the gates, and to a platform overlooking Lake Michigan. We sat down, and looked at the water. It was an absolutely perfect day. It was nice to not be working on a case. After a few minutes, my stomach started growling, so I told Mulder to feed me. "OK, but let's sit under those trees, so we can get a little shade." "Just lead the way." xxxxxxx I laid the blanket down on the grass, and Scully sat down. I opened up the basket. "Turkey sandwiches sound good?" "Anything sounds good now--my stomach is seriously talking to me!" "I've got some bottled water and fruit as well. Nothing fancy." "It's very nice, Mulder. I love my surprise. The park is beautiful, and it's a lovely day. Not a cloud in the sky." We ate our sandwiches, and enjoyed the view. Scully looked very relaxed in her denim skirt, green shirt, and flat shoes. Flat shoes--no wonder she looked smaller that usual. She was wearing a thin, gold chain on her right ankle. Another side of Scully I've never seen before... "...I've been on a picnic since I was a kid. Mulder? Mulder!" "Yeah--what is it?" "You didn't hear a word I said." "No. Sorry, Scully. I was just admiring the new you." "The new me?" "Yes, and I like it." "You must mean the clothes. I got these especially for my trip. Where's that fruit you promised me?" "Right here. I've got grapes and peaches. Which would you like?" "How about both? Grapes first, though." I took the fruit out of the basket. "Oh, good. No seeds!" "See, Scully--I thought of everything!" "Yes you have. And the peaches are just right too. Not too hard, not too soft. Just the way I like them." She took a bite, and juice dribbled down her chin. Her tongue flicked out and got the juice, just before it got too far away for her to reach. I got up. I needed to stretch my legs for a bit. "Being so close to the water like this, it reminds me of the summers when I was a kid. Sam and I would play on the beach all day." xxxxxxx I started to get worried. His encounter with Samantha in the starlight happened not too long ago... "Mulder, are you alright?" "Yeah, I'm okay, Scully. Really." I couldn't see his face to be sure. He just stood there looking at the water. I imagined he had a faraway look. He started to tell me a story about Samantha, her swimsuit, and a frog. It was very funny. "Don't make me laugh, Mulder! It hurts when I laugh!" "I'm sorry. How do you feel?" "I'll be okay. I'll just lie down for a little bit. Don't worry about me. Just enjoy the water." I didn't want him to get worried about me. My ribs are killing me. He didn't say anything else, just continued to look at the water. I'll just close my eyes for a few minutes. He won't mind... xxxxxxx "They're all gone now. Dad, Mom, Samantha--I've got nobody left. Except you..." Several minutes had gone by before I said this. I wasn't sure how Scully would take it. Knowing her, she would probably be worried about me. So, I turned around to look at her. She was asleep--again! "Oh, Scully..." I went to sit down next to her. A strand of hair had fallen onto her cheek, and I smoothed it away. She looked like she was in another uncomfortable position, so I placed her head in my lap, while I told her more stories about my sister. When I was done, I just sat there, looking at her. She didn't cover up her mole today. I like that. She should do that more often. All of a sudden, Scully started to shake. She also started to speak, her voice low at first, but then it got louder... "Look out!" She woke up quickly. "Where am I?" "You're in the park, Scully. Don't you remember?" "Yes! It was the headlights coming towards me again. The car just came out of nowhere!" "It's alright. You can go back to sleep now." "No, I'm okay. Did you know that the cabdriver didn't have a scratch on him after the accident?" "No." "I called the cab company Sunday morning and found out. Mulder, how long have I been asleep--and in your lap, I might add?" "I don't know, but it hasn't been too long. I was just telling you stories about Sam." "Mulder, you don't have to talk about her if you don't want to. I know it must be really painful right now..." "It's okay, Scully. I think it's helping me some. I always admired how you could talk about Melissa without falling apart." "Almost. Don't forget my outburst when I invited you over for dinner." "We won't count that one. It was an unusual circumstance." xxxxxxx That's Mulder. He never fails to put my needs first. Whatever would I do without him? I squeezed his hand. "Let's walk for a bit, shall we?" "Of course. Where to?" "Well, we can walk the rest of the way through the park. I see another platform down there, where we can sit down." We packed up everything, and walked to the second platform. We got a really nice view of the lake here. Navy Pier was not too far away, and we could see the Ferris wheel off in the distance. "You know, Navy Pier has fireworks on the weekends. Would you like to come with me on Saturday or Sunday?" "I'll get back to you on that." xxxxxxx We watched the water. Little waves hit the rocks down below the platform. After a few minutes, Scully stood up. "Mulder, I think I'd like to go back to the hotel. I hardly got any sleep last night. I was so anxious to get out of the hospital. I just tossed and turned all night. Sorry I fell asleep on you again!" "Don't worry about it. You shouldn't push yourself too hard. Did you take a painkiller today?" "No. How did you know--you talked to Dr. Saunders, didn't you?" "Yes, I hope you don't mind." "I should've known you would try to find out everything that happened." "Yes, the good doctor had me thinking terrible thoughts when he left that message on my machine. When I first heard it, I feared the worst." "Oh, Mulder, I'm sorry you had to go through that alone!" She sat back down, and laid her head on my shoulder. "If anything ever happened to you, I don't think..." xxxxxxx He never finished his sentence. Before I knew what was happening, I was in his arms. xxxxxxx I don't know what came over me. I just knew that I had to have Scully close to me at that moment. I whispered in her hair, "Scully, if you were ever gone from my life..." xxxxxxx I put my arms around his neck. I could feel his pulse--it was racing! "Mulder, it's alright! It'll take a little more than a car accident to get me out of your life." I hugged him tighter. Somehow, I felt he needed me really close to him right now. "C'mon, let's go." We held hands all the way back to the car, and drove back to the hotel in silence. I had no idea how scared he was when he found out about my accident! xxxxxxx SHERATON HOTEL ROOMS 1735 & 1736 4:05pm "Would you like to come in?" "No, Scully. You said you wanted to sleep, remember?" "Yeah, I know, but..." "What is it?" "It just seemed like you didn't want to be alone, that's all." "I didn't mean for you to get worried about me back at the park. I'm fine, really." "If you say so, Mulder. But call me, if you want to talk." "I will." He left. I went to my bedroom, got undressed, and slipped under the cool sheets. I was out in less than five minutes. xxxxxxx Scully seemed so concerned for me. I guess I really did scare her at the park. Everything I said was true. What would I do if Scully were taken away from me? How would I live? I don't think I could. After Samantha, Scully is all I have left. Now I'm making *myself* depressed! Scully doesn't need this on her vacation. Guess it's *our* vacation now. I'll let her sleep for a while, and I'll give her a call later... xxxxxxx 8:37pm "Scully, it's me." "Hi. What time is it?" "A little after 8:30. You sound like you're still asleep. I'll talk to you later." "No, Mulder, don't go. What is it?" "I've got a couple of turkey sandwiches left--want one?" "Sure, Mulder, but I'm not dressed." "That's okay, just throw something on--I won't mind." "Okay, give me 15 minutes, then I'm coming over." "Just let yourself in when you're ready. I'll leave the door unlocked." "Great. See you in a few minutes!" She clicked off. I set the blanket down by the window, and opened the curtains. I put the picnic basket down by the table, and turned the lamp on its lowest setting. The sun was going down. I sure hope Scully hurries up--she was going to miss the sunset! Seconds later, I heard her come in. "Mulder, why is it so dark..." "Surprise! For about the ten thousandth time today." "A picnic in your room? What a great idea! Oh my goodness, look at that sun! It's incredible..." She sat down, and I handed her a sandwich. "Thanks for sharing this with me, Mulder." "I'm happy to do it. Peach?" "Of course." She took a bite, and once again, the juice dribbled down her chin. As much as I wanted to lick it off, I took a napkin, and wiped it off. Scully laughed at me. "Mulderr..." I had to find a way to hear 'that voice' more often. We sat closer to the window, and looked at the city. The view at nighttime wasn't bad at all. I put my arm around Scully's shoulder. We enjoyed the sunset, and the rest of the evening, in silence. I held her hand, she held mine, and we saw the city of Chicago in a new light. To Be Continued... Milton L. Olive III was a Vietnam War hero, who bravely jumped on top of a grenade to save his fellow soldiers. For his act of bravery, he was posthumously given the Medal of Honor. I go to the park sometimes to 'get out of my head' when I'm having a not so great day! The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART NINE: DREAMS...AND A MAJOR DITCH XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX SHERATON HOTEL ROOM 1736 WEDNESDAY 11:21pm "Hey, sleepyhead! You keep yawning like that, and I'll start doing it too." "Mmm, sorry. We've been sitting here almost three hours!" "Yeah, Chicago at night isn't too bad." "You're right. It's been wonderful today. Mulder, thank you." "I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. But, it's late. I know you're tired. C'mon, I'll take you to bed." "Okay, I guess my bed is big enough for two." She laughed. "It's alright, Mulder. I know what you meant." We got up. I put my hand on that familiar spot on her back, and walked her to the door. She took the keycard out of her pocket, and opened her door. "You want to come in?" "No. It's been a long day. I'll just say goodnight here, and let you get some sleep." "But, Mulder, you *have* to come in. You said you would take me to bed." She grabbed my hand, and led me towards the bedroom. "See, big enough for two. Care to join me?" "Scully..." "I'm just joking, Mulder. Boy, I had you going there, didn't I?" I had you big time... I didn't say anything. I was in shock. Where is this coming from? I've never seen her in such a playful mood before. I've got to get out of here... "OK, Scully--it's been a long day and we're both tired. Goodnight." "Goodnight, Mul--" xxxxxxx He backed out of the room, and left. Wow, I didn't mean to scare the guy! Can't a girl have a little fun? xxxxxxx I went back to my room, and sat down on the couch. If Scully hadn't said she was joking, I would've believed her to be deadly serious. This might be harder than I thought... I turned on the TV. It was now 11:45. I need to get my mind off what just happened. I channel surfed until I found what I was looking for. Nothing like a little ESPN to get my mind off a gorgeous woman almost throwing herself at me. I watched for a couple of hours, and decided to go to bed. I took a long, hot shower before hitting the sheets. THURSDAY 4:51am I was walking down a sandy beach. The sky was clear, and the sun was bright. No one else seemed to be on the beach with me. That's when I saw her. It was Scully. I know that red hair anywhere, though I couldn't see her face. She had on a black nightgown. It was long and flowing, blowing in the breeze. The right side of the gown had a slit in it, revealing a shapely leg, with a thin, gold chain around her ankle. I tried to run to her, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't catch her. She never turned around to look at me, though I knew she was aware of my presence. Finally! I catch up to her. That's when she turns around and pushes me away from her. I fall down in the sand and... I woke up in a cold sweat. What the hell just happened? xxxxxxx ROOM 1735 5:17am I was in a beautiful garden. All the flowers were in bloom. It smelled heavenly. I wandered around a bit, just enjoying all the varieties, until I came upon a bunch of tulips, in all types of colors. I bent down to pick up a purple one, when I saw them. They were in a tree swing, off in the distance. I ran towards them. It was Melissa and Emily, just swinging in the slight breeze, with big smiles on their faces. Missy was wearing a dress, and Emily was in the clothes I saw her in the day I gave her my cross. I couldn't believe it. I tried to speak, but no words came out. That's when Melissa spoke. She says, "Take a chance, Dana. Go to him." Somehow, I get my power of speech back. "Missy, Emily. Sweetie, it's been so long..." And then I woke up. "No, don't go!" I couldn't believe it. What the hell just happened to me? That was too real to be a dream! I got out of bed, and paced the room. I went to the closet, and dug around in my luggage, until I found what I was looking for. I put my pictures of Melissa and Emily on the bedside table. I thought about what Missy said. What did it mean? I went back to bed. I'm too tired. I'll think about this later... xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 11:15am Didn't mean to sleep this late. I got dressed, and called Scully's room. No answer. I called downstairs to the front desk. I was told that Ms. Scully was unavailable, but she left a note for me. I went to get it. Mulder, I'm going to be really busy for the next few days, so don't get worried if we don't see each other. I'm off to enjoy the sights--you should do the same. Don't stay in your room. Get out and enjoy yourself. From our lovely day in the park yesterday, I know you can do it. Oh, and I didn't forget about Navy Pier--we'll just have to reschedule. Have a great day! Scully So, the *enigmatic* Agent Scully has ditched me! What am I gonna do now? The whole idea was that we were going to do this vacation thing together. It seems that Dana has other ideas... xxxxxxx SUNDAY 5:05pm I couldn't stand it any longer! I went and knocked on her door. Scully had better be in her room... "Who is it?" "Scully, it's me. Open the door!" "What's the matter, Mulder? You sound kind of agitated." "As well I should be. Scully, where have you been for the last three days?" "I've been enjoying my vacation. Haven't you?" "I guess so. But I'd enjoy it even more if I could spend some time with you." "That's really sweet of you, Mulder, but remember the conversation we had at your apartment?" "Yes." "Well then, don't you think we should start working on that distance between us?" "No, I don't think so, Scully." "Why not?" "Well, because..." "Because what?" "Because...because, things have changed." "What's changed?" "I don't know..." What is going on here? I've suddenly lost my power to speak, and I'm getting more and more angry as the seconds pass by. "Scully, what have you been doing?" "I signed up for some bus tours--that's what I've been doing! Enjoying the Windy City like I'm supposed to. And yourself?" "I've just been driving around in my car, all over the city." "And?" "And what? That's all. That's all I've done." "That's it? You didn't stop at a museum, a park, a beach-- anything?" "No." "Mulder, how are you going to enjoy your vacation if all you're going to do is drive around in your car?" "I don't know." "Well, I'd love to sit and chat more with you, but I've got a date." "A date? With who?" "Don't get all excited, Mulder! It's with my TV. AMC is showing From Here To Eternity tonight, and I need to get changed. And order room service." "A chick flick, Scully?" "If that's the way you want to describe it, yes." "Mind if I join you?" "I think I'll pass this time. You need to get out more, Mulder. Why don't you go to the Art Institute? They've got a lovely painting there by this French guy named Georges Seurat, called 'A Sunday Afternoon.' He made it with small dots of paint, which he called Pointillism. It's really quite amazing!" "OK, Scully. I'll check it out. Can we do something together tomorrow?" "I'm afraid not, Mulder. I've got another bus tour, but this is the last one. Why don't you meet me for breakfast at the Riverside Caf_ on Tuesday morning?" "Deal. Enjoy your movie, Scully." "I will. Goodnight, Mulder." "'Night, Scully." xxxxxxx MONDAY 7:37am Decided to get an early start today. Tried not to think about Scully *enjoying* another bus tour. I took her advice though, and went to the Art Institute. I saw the painting she mentioned, and yes, she was right. It was amazing. Must've taken Seurat a long time to get it finished, using dots of color instead of brush strokes. Saw some other interesting work there as well--from Africa, Asia, and Europe. After a couple of hours, I had lunch in their cafeteria. Decided on a hot dog. Bad choice. I'd had better down on Maxwell Street last Friday. I'll have to take Scully sometime, if I ever see her again... xxxxxxx ~WEEK THREE~ SHERATON CHICAGO HOTEL & TOWERS RIVERSIDE CAF... TUESDAY 8:30AM "Morning, Scully." "Good morning to you, too. How are you?" He sat down. "Lonely." "Lonely?" "Yes. I've been missing my partner for, how long has it been now? *Five* days! This has been a major ditch, Scully." "A ditch? How can you say that, Mulder? I'm on va--" "It doesn't matter. All water under the bridge now. So, what's your plans for today?" "I think I'm going to take it easy for awhile. I've been really pushing it the last few days, and there was no reason to. I think I'll just take a walk after breakfast, then go back to my room." "Are you alright, Scully?" "Yeah, I'm fine. It's just that my ribs have really started to bother me the last couple of days. I only take the painkillers before I go to bed. The pain has been getting worse, especially during the middle of the day." "Why don't you take your medication in the daytime?" "Because, Mulder, these are painkillers. They can be highly addictive! You don't want a pill-popping junkie for a partner, do you?" "No, I guess not." "Great! Let's eat, shall we? I've been told the Riverside has an excellent breakfast buffet, and I'm starved..." xxxxxxx I've never seen Scully eat so much--a croissant with butter and jam; pancakes and sausage; and an omelet and toast. Plus she drank a cup of milk, orange juice, and coffee! Where did she put it all? No wonder she wanted to take a walk when we were done... "You want to walk with me, Mulder?" "Sure. Where to?" "How about down Michigan Avenue?" "Fine, let's go." 9:52am We took a nice, leisurely stroll down Michigan Avenue, nicknamed 'The Magnificent Mile.' Scully did a lot of window shopping, craning her neck to get a better look inside the storefront displays. When we got to a candy store called Fannie May, she stopped. "Oh, that looks so good! All that chocolate!" "Want to go in?" "I'd love to. Too tempting, though. I just know I gained about twenty pounds eating that huge breakfast. So, no chocolate for Dana!" We finished our walk, and headed back towards the hotel. "That walk was very good exercise. Hope I burned a lot of calories." "I'm sure we both did. How do you feel?" "I feel great. Think I'll take a nap, though." She opened her door. "Want to come in? Come on! I'll fix you a drink." "Just water is fine." "OK, Mulder! You big baby, what's the matter? You think I can't make a decent--aahh!" Scully bent over, clutching her stomach. "Scully, what is it?" "Oooh, my ribs! It felt like someone just kicked me! Oooh, I need to sit down." "No, I think you need to lie down. Here, I'll help you to the bed." xxxxxxx Mulder helped me to the bedroom. I sat down, and he took off my shoes. I lay down. "I'll be right back." "Where are you going?" "I'll just be a second." He came back with a glass of water. "I want you to take a painkiller right now. That's from Dr. Mulder, so I don't want to hear any arguments. Better yet, take two. It says here on the bottle to take two if the pain is severe. I think now's the time." I didn't want to argue with him, so I did as I was told. "Mulder, can you do me a really big favor?" "What is it?" "Could you go over to the other side of the bed, and turn on the radio? The music will calm me down, until these pills kick in." "Don't tell me--the smooth jazz station?" "Yes. It's already set there. They've got a pretty good station here in Chicago." "Your wish is my command. But I'm not going to turn it up too loud, or you'll never get to sleep!" "Thanks, Mulder." xxxxxxx I saw her pictures of Emily and Melissa by the radio. Then I saw Scully grimace, and roll over onto her stomach. "Hey, you okay?" "Yeah, just trying to get into a more comfortable position." "Relax, Scully. Take deep breaths." I saw her close her eyes. I put my hand on her back, and made some slow circles, hoping it would help. "That's nice, Mulder. Could you bend down to me a little bit?" I leaned down towards her. Our foreheads were nearly touching. Scully looked up at me, and kissed me on the cheek. "What was that for?" "For being my friend, and taking care of me." I didn't know what to say to that, especially since she was looking at me in a way I've never seen before. I wanted to kiss her right then, and get into bed with her. Hold her until she fell asleep. Something held me back. I didn't want to push it just yet. We've still got some vacation left. "Go to sleep, Scully." "Okay." "I'll be right in the other room." I left her, and looked out the window. Scully was an amazing woman. I don't think even she knows how incredible she is. Am I seeing what I want to see, or is she giving me mixed signals? I'm not sure... 6:36pm After I was sure Scully was sound asleep, I went to my room, where I've been thinking. I wanted to do something nice for her, so once again I called the concierge to get it for me. I didn't want to leave the hotel in case Scully needed me. A few minutes later, she called. "Mulder, it's me." "I know. Feeling better?" "Yes. Thanks again, Mulder." "No problem. I'll be back over there in a few minutes." "OK, I'm not going anywhere!" She giggled, and hung up. xxxxxxx 7:18pm I heard a knock on the door. Could only be one person. "Come in--the door's open!" "I knew you'd be hungry, so I brought dinner." "You did? What is it?" "You'll see. Where do you want it?" "Put it on the bed. I'll eat it there." xxxxxxx She was talking from behind the bathroom door, so it was very hard to make out what she was saying, even though she was practically yelling at the top of her lungs! Her hair dryer was buzzing, so that might have been the problem. I asked her to repeat what she said. "I said, I'll eat it in bed!" She opened the door. Scully was wearing a hotel robe, which was way too big for her. She had to pull the sleeves up to her elbows, and the bottom of it was dragging on the floor. She had her hair pulled back into a ponytail. She never looked more gorgeous. "Scully! That robe is going to swallow you up whole!" "I know! I couldn't resist it. Think I'll take it home with me. What's for dinner?" "See for yourself." She lifted the tray. "Tossed salad, breadsticks, and lasagna! Thanks! I'm really hungry. I don't know what it is about Chicago that makes me want to eat everything in sight..." She dug right in, oohing and ahhing with every couple of bites. "Sure you don't want any?" "Nope. I ate already." It was a lie, but I didn't dare eat with her. I was enjoying her eat too much to have any food myself... "I've got a surprise for you." "Another one?" "Yeah. Let me go to my room and get it." I came back seconds later, and told Scully to close her eyes. I moved the tray to the other side of the bed, and placed the box right down in front of her. "Open your eyes, Scully." "You know, you don't have to keep surprising me. What's this--a rectangle box, wrapped in red paper? Wonder what it could be?" "You won't know if you don't open it. Go ahead." xxxxxxx I had no idea what it was. I picked up the box, and felt the paper. It was very thick. Maybe I should save it. Nah. The suspense was killing me already, so I ripped it off, and got a pleasant surprise. "Fannie May Pixies? Mulder, you shouldn't have! And you got a whole pound? I can't possibly eat it all. You just want me to get fat, don't you?" "Never crossed my mind. I was told that Pixies are one of their most popular items. It's got caramel and pecans in it. Hope you like them." "Oh no, partner! You don't get off so easily..." xxxxxxx She opened the box, and handed a piece to me. "No, Scully. It's your gift. You enjoy it." "But you've got to have a bite. One bite at least. Please?" "OK, but you have the first bite." "Not a problem there!" She took a bite, and closed her eyes. "Mmm, it's delicious! Here, have a piece." She picked up another piece, but I shook my head. She still had a little bit left of the piece in her hand, so I took hold of her wrist, brought it to my mouth, and took a bite, my mouth wrapping around her fingers, and licking the chocolate off them. I saw Scully's eyes glaze over, and a small gasp escape from her throat... xxxxxxx I dropped the other piece back in the box. Mulder was licking melted chocolate off my fingers, sucking it off actually, and *I* was letting him! I suddenly started to feel very light-headed. He was looking at me so intensely, not saying a word... xxxxxxx "Mulderr..." "Yes, Scully?" "Have another piece?" She licked her lips, pushed the box towards me, and jumped off the bed like it was on fire! xxxxxxx I pushed the box towards him, and got off the bed. It was getting dark in the room. I turned on the lamp, and walked towards the window. My head was swimming! I had to get him out of here, but how? I had no idea. "Scully?" He was right behind me. I could feel him inching ever so close. It was like a magnet, pulling him in my direction. "I'm gonna say goodnight now. Enjoy your candy." He kissed me on the back of my neck, and left. My legs gave out on me, and I slowly sank to the floor. Oh my God--I can't believe he just did what he did... xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 11:57pm I'm here, lying in bed, hardly believing I did what I did. Boy, Mulder--when you make your move, you don't waste any time, do you? And that gasp from Scully! I knew I wasn't imagining that. She looked totally flustered. Poor girl. She doesn't have a clue. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX SHERATON HOTEL ROOM 1735 WEDNESDAY 2:02am I'm lying in bed, but I can't seem to fall asleep. After Mulder left my room a little after 8:30 last night, I just sat there on my floor in shock, not quite wanting to believe what just happened. I could still feel him. Mulder's breath--hot. Mulder's lips--cool. On my skin. Why did he do that? Mulder... Now, if only I could get rid of this searing pain in my side. I took two more painkillers over two hours ago, and it doesn't seem to be working. I'd better call Dr. Saunders and see if he can squeeze an appointment in with me today. If only I can get some sleep first... xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 10:13am I was back on that sandy beach. I saw Scully in her black nightgown, just like before, walking by the water, just close enough not to get her feet wet. Just like before, the gold chain was on her right ankle. I knew she was aware of my presence, but she still ignored me, until I caught up to her. She turns around, pushes me in the sand, and walks away. I try to get up, but my legs don't seem to want to move... And then I wake up. "Scully..." I started to get really worried, so I called her room. "Hello?" "Scully, it's me." "Mulder! Now is not a good time." "Why? Is something wrong?" Her voice didn't sound right. I knew it! "No, n-n-no, nothing's wrong. I just remembered somewhere I have to be today, that's all. I've got to go." "Scully, you don't sound yourself. Are you sure you're alright?" "Mulder, please! Don't start with a lecture! I've got to leave in a few minutes..." She was lying to me, and I couldn't figure out why. I have to find out. I quickly got dressed, and called downstairs for my car. I was determined to get to the bottom of this... 10:37am When I heard Scully leave her room, I gave her a minute, and came out to follow her. I took the next elevator down. Thankfully, it was an express trip all the way to the lobby. I saw the doorman hail a cab, and Scully got inside. I told them to keep my car out of sight. I didn't want Scully to see it. When I gave the signal, they brought it around, and I hopped in, trying not to lose sight of her. When her cab pulled up in front of the hospital, I was furious... xxxxxxx RUSH-PRESBYTERIAN-ST. LUKE'S MEDICAL CENTER 11:05am Dr. Saunders was able to squeeze in an appointment with me at 11:15. He checked me out, but couldn't find anything wrong. So he decided to put some bandages over my ribs, and wrap them up really tight. I felt like a mummy once he was done. He told me to take it easy, and not to do any kind of heavy lifting, or strenuous exercise. When I got ready to leave, I saw Mulder at the other end of the hallway. He did not look pleased. "Scully, why didn't you tell me?" "Mulder, why are you here? You followed me, didn't you? Didn't you? That's the only way you could've known I'd be here. Look, Mulder, you don't have to keep doing this. I'm a big girl. I can take ca--" I couldn't finish my sentence. Mulder grabbed me by the shoulders, and started gently shaking me. "Scully, you don't have to hide things from me. Now I want to know why you came here!" "Not here, Mulder. People are starting to stare at us. Let's go to your mid-life crisis car. You *did* drive it, didn't you?" "Yes." "Okay, let's go." xxxxxxx 12:05pm When we got to his car in the parking garage, I let him have it. "How dare you, Mulder! I'm on vacation, and you have the nerve to put your partner on surveillance! How big of you!" "Wait a minute! I'm not the one who lied to her partner." "Who lied? I told you I had somewhere to be. Just because I didn't tell you where doesn't mean you can follow me around whenever you please!" xxxxxxx She got out of the car, and slammed the door. Scully was really angry, and so was I. I ran to her, and reached for her arm. That was a mistake. "Don't touch me, Mulder! I've had just about enough of you today! Oh!" When she pulled away from me, she bent over. "Scully? Are you alright?" "I'm fine. Dr. Saunders' just got me wrapped up tight, and it's going to take some getting used to." "Wrapped up?" She lifted up her shirt, revealing some bandages wrapped around her stomach. "I've got to get out of here..." "Hey, where're you going?" "Away from you. And try to enjoy the rest of the day without putting my fist in a wall!" "Wait! Look, Scully, I'm sorry. I just knew something wasn't right, and curiosity got the better of me." "I don't want to hear it, Mulder! Goodbye!" She left. I've never seen her that mad at me before. I'm just glad she's okay. I got in my car, wondering how I was going to resolve this. I saw Scully get in a cab and leave. I know I shouldn't be doing this, but I decided to follow her again... xxxxxxx SEARS TOWER 233 S. WACKER DRIVE I decided to go to the one place I really wanted to see when I got to Chicago. But I was still so angry at what Mulder had done. I knew I wouldn't enjoy it. I decided to sit down for a few minutes and try to calm down. When I saw Mulder come through the revolving door, I got up to leave... "Don't go, Scully! Look, I know I shouldn't have followed you again, but I didn't like the way we ended things. I'll go if you don't want me here." "Guess I'm not going to get rid of you today. You'll be my constant shadow! OK, Mulder, you win! I can't make you go, so you might as well stay." "Great! But let's have lunch first. My treat!" "How can I pass that up? You lead the way." Luckily, we didn't have to go far. We had lunch at the Corner Bakery, right in the building. Eating something finally calmed me down, and I told Mulder I was ready to go. 1:59pm "OK, let's go to the top!" "You sure?" "Yeah, let's go!" I paid for both our tickets, and we waited in line. After about ten minutes, doors opened to a small theater, where we sat down to watch a short film about the building, and the city in general. Afterwards, we got into an elevator, where we were whisked up to the 103rd floor in sixty-eight seconds flat! When the doors opened, Mulder and I looked at each other in amazement. "Wow! This is incredible! Hey, let's go over there. Nobody's standing by that window." xxxxxxx She led me over by an empty window, with a viewer pointed down on the city. Scully put two quarters in the slot, and looked inside. "Now that's a place I haven't visited yet." "What place?" "Look for yourself." "That's Buckingham Fountain, isn't it?" "Yes. They have this really great light show at night." "Then we'll have to see it before our vacation ends." I looked back at Scully. I know she wanted to say something, but she didn't. I didn't push her. We enjoyed the rest of the view, making sure we walked all around the floor, seeing the city from all angles. After an hour, we were finished. "Anywhere else you want to go, Scully?" "No, I think I'll call it a day. Let's go back to the hotel." xxxxxxx SHERATON HOTEL ROOM 1736 6:55pm I left Scully alone to get some rest. She told me she was going to put the radio on, and lie down for a nap. I asked her about the smooth jazz station. She told me the frequency, and to give it a try. I've been listening to it for the last couple of hours. Not bad, though it'll take some getting used to. When seven o'clock rolled around, I heard the familiar strains of Gato Barbieri... "Hello! Welcome to Lights Out Chicago. I'm Danae Alexander. Well, it's an absolutely gorgeous night in the city, so why don't you sit back, relax, and enjoy some smooth jazz, on WNUA, 95.5, Chicago..." I was *really* starting to like this station now. Hopefully, I can get Scully to dance with me to that song again sometime. I decided to give her a call. "Hey, Scully, wanna watch the game with me?" "What game?" "The Yankees and White Sox." "Baseball?" "Yeah, it'll be great. It starts at 7:30. Come on over and watch with me. And Scully, I really like the radio station. I'll leave the door unlocked for you!" xxxxxxx He didn't give me time to answer before he hung up. Better go see what all the fuss is about... 7:29pm "Hey, Mulder, where are you?" "Right here. I was looking for my cap to wear." "You brought it with you?" "Sure. Got to let everybody know I'm a big fan!" "Yeah, right. I haven't seen you wear it once!" "Oh, but you haven't seen me everyday. Believe me, I've been wearing it." We sat down on the couch, and Mulder turned on the television. Since I had no clue as to what was going on, he explained the finer points of the rules. I guess you could call it 'Mulder's Baseball Rules 101'. Unfortunately for him, the Yankees were not doing so well tonight. They lost 6 to 5. "I guess they should've used that 'hips before hands' technique you taught me, Mulder." "Scully, I'm surprised you remembered that." "Of course I remember. It was quite a memorable birthday for me, for a change. The Yankees sure could've used Frank Thomas on their team. What did the announcer call him; the Big Something?" "The Big Hurt. Yeah, those three home runs definitely did the Yankees in. It's almost eleven o'clock. I'd better let you go." "OK. Goodnight, Mulder." "Goodnight, Scully." xxxxxxx I just looked at her, wondering what I should do next. I walked her to the door, and she took the keycard out of her pocket. "You take it easy. Call me if you need anything." "Mulder, I don't need a nursemaid." "I know you don't. Just humor me, okay?" "Sure. Fine. Whatever. Sweet dreams, Mulder." And with that, she closed her door. Funny she should mention dreams. I've had that dream about her twice now, and I still can't figure it out. My Oxford education is not coming through for me. C'mon, Mulder! You're the psychologist--you should be able to interpret a simple dream! The problem is that I don't really want to, since it scared me so much. In the back of my mind, I really *did not* want to know. SATURDAY 8:15am Decided to let Scully have a couple of days alone, while I did some sightseeing, to catch up on some places I'd missed. She suggested a bus tour, but I wanted to do some exploring on my own. I wanted to respect her rules of keeping distance, but I was finding it very difficult. I met her at the Fresh Cup for coffee. "So, how did the sightseeing go?" "Very well, thanks. What will you be doing today?" "I don't know yet. I can't decide." "Care to take a drive with me?" "I don't know, Mulder." "C'mon, I'll even let you drive, if you'd like." "You will?" "Sure." "OK, let me go change clothes." "But what you're wearing is fine." "I know, but I've got something new I haven't worn yet. And a surprise!" "Oooh, that sounds mysterious!" "Give me 15 minutes." "Just meet me in the lobby when you're ready." 9:00am "Scully! Why didn't you tell me you had your Yankees cap, too?" "That's my surprise. I didn't think I would wear it. I just threw it in with my clothes. I don't even know why I did..." "Mulder? The car keys?" "Oh. Yeah, sure--here they are." "Mulder, you okay?" "Yes. Just thinking about something. Purple jeans, Scully? The color scheme continues. Should I start expecting purple suits at work?" "You never know." We got in, she put the key in the ignition, and then we were off. Scully drove through the downtown area, then down Michigan Avenue. When she asked where we could drive that has a nice view, I suggested the Outer Drive expressway. "We should start at the end of the drive, though. You can see the lakefront all along it." I gave her directions, and in a few minutes, we were there. She turned left onto the drive, and we got started on our view of the lake. I told her to slow down; she was going way over the speed limit! "You don't want to get a ticket, do you?" "Live a little, Mulder. I'm just checking this baby out. I know you must've gone over 55 at least once since you've had this car." "I have. But it was late at night, and the traffic was light." "See! I knew you couldn't resist it." We passed by McCormick Place, and proceeded down Lake Shore Drive. "Oh! I know where we can go. The concierge told me about it." "And that place would be?" "What's the matter, Mulder--don't you like surprises?" OAK STREET BEACH 10:25am "He told me this was the most popular beach in the city. And since it's still early in the day, it shouldn't be too crowded." After she parked the car, we got out, crossed the street, and walked down a tunnel towards the beach. Scully was right about it not being crowded. There was hardly anyone here. Just the occasional jogger or bicyclist went by us. We sat down on a bench, and looked at the water. Scully took off her cap and shoes. "What are you doing?" "I'm going to walk in the sand. Don't you want to?" "No. I'll just sit here." "Suit yourself." Scully walked towards the water, dipped her toe in, and stepped back. I watched her walk along the waterline, stepping back when it got too close. There was a slight breeze in the air, and she kept moving the hair away from her face. I suddenly saw flashes of my dream. When Scully pushed me down in the sand, she said, "Time to go." I jumped off the bench. A chill went through my entire body. I had to get away from here--right now! I ran towards Scully. "Hey, Scully, think we can leave now?" "But we just got here!" "I know, and I'm sorry, but I'd really like to go." "Okay, whatever you say. Let me get my shoes back on." xxxxxxx Something is going on with him. I'm not going to press it though. He looks like he's just seen a ghost! I drove him back to the hotel. He didn't say one word on our way back there. xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 11:00am "Okay, Mulder, what gives? You haven't said a word since we left the beach." "Nothing." "Oh, I know it's not nothing. It's definitely *something*. But you're not going to tell me. I understand. If you want to talk about it, you know where to find me." She went to her room. I couldn't tell Scully about my dream, or the flashes of it on the beach. She would just tell me that this was all nonsense, and not to worry about it. I just keep getting these odd feelings. I can't put my finger on it, but until I figure it out, I'll let Scully enjoy her vacation without me... To Be Continued... Want to know more about the Sears Tower? Wonder what he's been up to? Think I'll call him after breakfast and find out... 8:40am "Mulder, it's me." "Yeah, hey, Scully." "How are you?" "I'm fine." "OK, you obviously still don't want to tell me what happened to you on Saturday, do you?" "No, I don't." "What've you done since then?" "Oh, I've been around. How about you?" "Well, I've been very busy. I've gone to the Museum of Science & Industry, the Field Museum, the Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium!" "Good. Enjoy yourself?" "Sure did. Would've been nicer if you went to those places with me." "Scully! What happened to that distance you suggested weeks ago?" "I'm throwing it out the window. I keep thinking back to the picnic we had at Olive Park the day I got out of the hospital, as well as the other things we did. That was so much fun, Mulder. We did it together, not apart. I guess I've been missing my partner as well. Though I'm not going to call it a ditch like you did!" "Why, Scully, I'm touched! Truly, I am. What's on the agenda today?" "I'm going shopping. I probably won't buy anything, but I'd like to look inside a store this time, instead of just looking in the windows." "Where to? I'll take you." "Water Tower Place." xxxxxxx 'THE MAGNIFICENT MILE' WATER TOWER PLACE 835 N. MICHIGAN AVENUE 11:00am We took a walk in the small park across the street from the mall first. We sat on a bench and watched the children playing. Mulder just squeezed my hand, and didn't say anything. When we got to the mall, we took the escalator up to the 2nd floor, and then took the express elevator up to the 7th floor. The elevators were made of glass, so you could see everything all around. We were the only people on board. Mulder pushed the button for seven, and the doors closed. "Why are we going to the 7th floor first?" "Because it's easier that way. We'll start at the top, and work our way down." "Guess you're the expert at this shopping thing." "I'm not an expert. It's just the most practical thing to do. Let's go look at shoes first..." xxxxxxx 1:15pm OK, I'm starting to get restless now. Scully has bought shoes, candles, postcards, and a T-shirt for her nephew. Time for a break! And we were only on the 5th floor! "Time-out, Scully! Let's take a break for lunch." "OK, and I know just the place. And it's even on this floor, just around the corner." "McDonald's! Scully, since when do you eat there?" "I do indulge on occasion. Besides, I'm just dying for some french fries!" That's all she ate--french fries, and a diet soda to drink. I just watched her, entranced, while I tried not to choke on my Big Mac. Just how did she get her tongue to wrap around each fry so seductively like that? "Mulder? Mulder!" "Oh! Yes, Scully?" "Off in dreamland again?" "OK, you caught me. What did you say?" "You don't have to stay with me. I can tell you were getting bored." "I wasn't bored! Let's just split up, and we'll meet downstairs on the 2nd floor by the directory in, let's say, two hours?" "OK, but I want you to buy something, Mulder! I don't want to see you empty-handed in two hours." "I'll try, but I can't guarantee it." 3:55pm I actually had a good time. I got a great idea, and being away from Scully gave me time to get it started. She met me on time by the directory, where I was waiting for her. "So, you *did* buy something! What did you get?" "Can't tell you yet." "Oooh, that sounds mysterious!" "All in good time..." "Do you mind if we go back to the hotel, drop off our packages, and go somewhere else?" "Sure, no problem. Where to?" "It's a surprise..." xxxxxxx Mulder was so good at surprises, I thought I'd just return the favor. We got back to the hotel, dropped off our packages, and met each other in the lobby. He told me that since it was my surprise, I could drive the car. xxxxxxx GRANT PARK CLARENCE BUCKINGHAM MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN 4:47pm "Nice surprise, Scully." "You haven't been here yet, have you?" "No." "Good. We can see it together for the first time." The fountain was spectacular. We read a short history on it, before we walked around. A gift from Kate Buckingham, in memory of her brother, it was dedicated in 1927. The entire fountain holds 1,500,000 gallons of water, which recirculates 14,000 gallons a minute from 133 jets. I took Scully's hand, and we slowly made our way around the entire fountain. At five o'clock, the water shot straight up towards the sky, and we got slightly misted by the spray. We walked around to a dry spot, and stopped. I put my arm around Scully's waist, and we just looked at the water, not saying anything for a few minutes, until she broke the silence... xxxxxxx "So, Mulder, are you ever going to tell me about your strange behavior last Saturday?" "Let's not talk about it. Let's just enjoy the fountain, okay?" I wasn't going to let this go, so I took his hand, and led him over to the nearby Buckingham Caf_ & Grill. I got us both a drink, and we sat down. "Mulder, you can tell me whatever it is that's troubling you." "I know, but I'd rather not." "I'm insisting, Mulder. I'd really like to know." "And you'll keep on bugging me about it until I do tell you, right?" "Right." "Well, if you must know, it was a dream that had me spooked that day. I'd had it two times already, and flashes of it on the beach." "Was *I* in the dream?" "Yes, it was about you. But that's all I'll say about it. I don't want to think about it anymore." "OK, Mulder. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to push you like that, but you really worried me." "Maybe one day I'll tell you about it." "Care to take another trip around the fountain?" "Sure." I had to end that conversation quickly. So, we both have dreams we don't want to talk about. Maybe I'll tell him about mine some day as well. SHERATON HOTEL ROOMS 1735 & 1736 6:30pm "Wow, I'm really tired! How about you, Mulder?" "Nope. In fact, I think I'll go out for a run." "A run? Ugh! You have fun. Think I'll just turn on the radio, and curl up with a good book." "Are you going to listen to 'Lights Out Chicago'? You know, that Danae Alexander really has got a great voice." "WNUA is the only station I've been listening to since I got here, so of course I'll be listening at seven o'clock!" "You have fun, Scully. Goodnight." "Goodnight, Mulder." xxxxxxx I ran to Olive Park, and went around it a few times. It had been awhile since I ran, and my legs really felt like lead when I was finished. I decided to walk back to the hotel. I took a long, hot shower, and even managed to catch the end of the Knicks game. At 11:15, I went to bed. I didn't want to stay up too late. I had to put my plan in motion early in the morning. WEDNESDAY 8:00am I called Frohike earlier this morning for another favor. Once that was taken care of, I called downstairs for room service. I had everything ready--for now. I knocked on Scully's door, and disguised my voice. "Who is it?" "Room Service." "OK, give me a minute!" That minute was all I needed. I set the tray down, and ran down the hallway for the elevator. I had one more thing to get, and then my plan would be complete... xxxxxxx "I didn't order room service." No one was around. But I found a tray on the floor, picked it up, and went back into my room. I sat down on the couch, and put the tray on the table. It felt very light. This has got to be some kind of a mistake. I lifted the lid. Inside was a chocolate-covered strawberry, with a note from Mulder. He must've gotten that yesterday when we were at Water Tower. What was the name of that store? Aunt Diana's Candy Makers. He must've caught me looking in the window after we split up. That little devil! I haven't even finished all of my Pixies yet! Thank goodness he only sent one. I took a bite, and read his note. Scully, I know you've been very patient with me the last few days, and I thank you for it. We've both been through a lot these four weeks, and I'd like to end our vacation on a good note. So, I am asking you out on a Date on Saturday night at Shula's for dinner. That's right--you read my invitation correctly! A Date--with a capital "D". That means we both get dressed up, and we try to have a good time. In fact, I know we will. You've got a couple of days, so go out and buy something that will dazzle me. I promise you won't be disappointed! Mulder A date! What do I do now? I can't possibly go out on a date with Mulder! I didn't know why, but I decided to call Mulder. He didn't answer. I called downstairs, and was told Mr. Mulder was not available at this time. Great! You send me this invitation, and then make sure you're nowhere around when I read it. I think he *is* going through some kind of mid- life crisis! You don't ask your partner on a date... 9:03pm I heard Mulder go to his room. Finally! Where has he been all day? I called his number. "Mulder, where have you been all day? I've been trying to reach you for hours!" "Really? I've been out." "I know that, but where?" "If I told you that, I'd have to kill you." "No time for jokes, Mulder! What's the big deal of inviting me out on a date?" "Hey! I put plenty of thought into this. I'm serious, Scully. I'd like to go out with you on Saturday night." "Mulder, I don't know..." "Oh no, Scully! This offer is non-negotiable. I'm not taking no for an answer. I knew you were going to have doubts about this. You've got two days to buy something nice." "But, Mulder..." "No buts, Scully. We'll have a good time. I promise." xxxxxxx I heard a few seconds of silence before Scully answered. "OK, Mulder. I'll go, but on one condition." "What is it?" "We'll go to Navy Pier afterwards. I still haven't seen the fireworks yet." "It's a deal. I'll pick you up for dinner at 7:30. Goodnight, Scully." "'Night, Mulder." xxxxxxx THURSDAY 9:45am I had to get something to *dazzle* Mulder with on our date, so I went on a little shopping expedition. I started on State Street, at Marshall Field's and Carson Pirie Scott. No luck. I tried on Michigan Avenue, at Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, and Bloomingdale's. Still no luck. I was starting to get desperate, so I went to a payphone to call the hotel. I talked to the concierge, and he told me where I could go... I ended up on Oak Street, where fancy designer shops are everywhere you look. After five minutes, I saw it in the window, and knew I had to have it. I went inside and tried it on, and it fit like a glove. The sales clerk told me it was an original, and would I like to try on the matching shoes as well. I went for it. I was seriously maxing out my credit card, but I didn't care. Might as well go all the way, right? xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 7:30pm I decided to give Scully a call to see how things were going. "Hey, Scully! How's everything?" "Everything's okay. You ready for Saturday night?" "Yeah. How about you?" "I've got a couple more things to take care of, but I'll be ready." "Great. I just wanted to check out things with you and make sure you didn't change your mind!" "Not a chance, Mulder! You're stuck with me. Goodnight." "Goodnight, Scully." To Be Continued... The Distance Between Us By mulder42 PART TWELVE: YOU GIVE GOOD LOVE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~WEEK FOUR~ SHERATON HOTEL ROOM 1735 FRIDAY 7:03am I was back in the garden, just like before. I walked around, admiring all the flowers. I bent down to pick up a purple tulip. Everything smelled great. Then I see Melissa and Emily again, in the tree swing, off in the distance, with huge smiles on their faces. I ran to them, unable to speak. Melissa says, "Take a chance, Dana. Go to him." And then I wake up. "Not again! I really don't need this right now. I've got a busy day ahead of me..." 8:17am "Mulder?" "Scully, in a hurry?" "Yes. I've got an appointment at ten o'clock, and I can't be late!" "Where?" "I can't tell you that." "OK. It's still early. Let's get some coffee. You look like you could use it." "I don't know. I really wanted to stop somewhere else first." "OK. If you let me take you to this 'somewhere else', will you have coffee with me?" "Alright, Mulder. But let's get it to go. I really don't want to be late." "Don't worry--you'll be on time. Take a deep breath, Scully. You look tense..." xxxxxxx She *was* tense. When I put my hand on her back to escort her to the elevator, I could feel the muscles there all bunched up. She must be having second thoughts about our date tomorrow. I knew this would happen! xxxxxxx Mulder put his hand on my back, as usual. I knew he could tell how tense I was. Why did I have to have that dream today? I'm too worked up as it is. We went downstairs to the Fresh Cup for coffee, and then I asked Mulder for his car keys. "No way, Scully! You're in no condition to drive. Just tell me where you want to go." "Mulder!" "No. Look at yourself! If you hold that cup any tighter, you're going to spill coffee all over you!" "OK, you're right. I'll be fine in a moment." I told him where to go. It wasn't very far, so it only took a few minutes to get there. xxxxxxx RICHARD J. DALEY PLAZA 50 W. WASHINGTON STREET 8:50am "What is it?" "It's the Picasso sculpture. No one really knows what it is. Kind of looks like a bird, don't you think?" "Looks like a woman to me." We sat down and finished our coffee in silence for a few minutes. When I looked up at Scully, she seemed like she was far away in her thoughts. I was really starting to get worried, so I asked her flat out if she was going to cancel our date. "Why would I do that, Mulder? It's not the date that's bothering me right now, it's..." She didn't finish her sentence. She got up, and walked towards the sculpture. She seemed to be in a daze. I walked up to her. "Hey, Scully! You look strange. Are you sure you're okay?" "I'm fine! Oh, look--it's 9:30. I've got to go. There's a cab. I'll see you tomorrow, Mulder. Don't worry about me." She ran off to the cab, and then she was gone. What was that all about? Don't worry about her? Yeah, right! xxxxxxx I made it with three minutes to spare. I made an appointment after I got back from my shopping yesterday with a fancy day spa. Facial, manicure, and pedicure--the whole works. More maxing out of the credit card. Finally something to get my mind off that dream! I got back to the hotel a little after 7. No sign of Mulder. Good. I really don't need the questions right now. I was rejuvenated, and ready for our date tomorrow. xxxxxxx I heard Scully come back to her room, but I decided not to call her. It's just got to be pre-date jitters. I'm pretty sure she's okay now. Besides, if she wanted to cancel, she would come right over here and tell me face-to-face, wouldn't she? Wouldn't she? SATURDAY 11:30am "Scully?" "Yes, Mulder?" "I've got some good and bad news." "What is it?" "The bad news is I rescheduled dinner for 6:30. The good news is because I thought you'd like a little time to look around Navy Pier, without being rushed. What time do the fireworks start, anyway?" "Ten o'clock. The earlier time is fine, Mulder. By the way, I've been meaning to ask you--how did you get a reservation to Shula's anyway? I was told you needed to make one two weeks in advance. I guess we had the same idea, because I was going to invite you to dinner there as well." "You were going to invite me to dinner?" "Yes, kind of a thank-you for taking care of me while I was in the hospital, and checking with the hotel about my room. How did you manage it, Mulder?" "I called a friend." "Mulder! Not Frohike again?" "I cannot tell a lie. I called him for a little favor." "Mulder, you didn't have to do that!" "I know. I wanted to. Did you get something nice, Scully?" "Yes, I got something nice to dazzle you with." "Can't wait to see it. I'll pick you up at 6:15, okay?" "I'll be here." She clicked off. Only seven more hours to go... xxxxxxx ROOM 1735 5:00pm I sat around all day, just listening to the radio. When five o'clock rolled around, I jumped into the shower. I had my dress, hosiery, and shoes all laid out on the bed. Why am I so nervous? I carefully got dressed. 5:45pm Mulder will be here in half an hour, and I can't stop my hands from shaking! I'd better give him a call... "Mulder?" "Hey, Scully! You almost ready?" "Yeah, almost. Look, do you mind if I meet you downstairs in the lobby? I'm having a little trouble with my dress." "Want me to come over?" "No, silly! It's nothing I can't handle. Just some zipper problems." "OK, if you say so." xxxxxxx She clicked off. Why do I get the strange feeling that Scully is about to ditch me? xxxxxxx 6:15pm I'm still sitting here, trying to calm down. I've got to go downstairs and meet Mulder! Come on, Dana--you can do it... I don't go out very much. I think the last time I went on a date was to see "Glengarry Glen Ross," and the characters in the movie had a much better time. xxxxxxx SHERATON CHICAGO HOTEL & TOWERS SHULA'S STEAK HOUSE 6:20pm I was about to go up to Scully's room when I saw her come out of the elevator. I was speechless. She was wearing a lavender-colored dress. It went down to about a few inches above her ankles. A slit on the right side. Matching color shoes, with the gold chain around her right ankle. Very thin straps, with a little cleavage showing. Her red hair was piled on top of her head. OK, I'm dazzled! "Scully, you look--you look..." "Is it okay?" "Yes. It's more than okay! You look gorgeous!" "Thank you, and you look very handsome, Mulder. I wasn't expecting a tuxedo from you." "Well, I did say to get dressed up, didn't I? Let's go inside..." I put my hand on Scully's back, and I discovered something. Her dress didn't have any zippers! And, she seemed to be shaking slightly. So, she *is* nervous! The maitre d' showed us to our table. xxxxxxx I'm pretty sure Mulder could tell how nervous I was. There were only two other couples there, and we were spaced out very well, so privacy wouldn't be a factor. Mulder told me that we beat the evening rush. "So, Scully--I don't see any zippers on that dress. What gives?" "Sorry. I was so nervous. Guess I still am. I'm sure you could tell." "Yes. I just wasn't sure you would admit it to me." "I could use a really good drink right now..." We both had a glass of wine, and looked at our menus. After our orders were taken, Mulder said he had a present for me. He took a small black box out of his jacket pocket. xxxxxxx When I took the box out of my jacket, I saw Scully's eyes get huge. She took a long gulp of her wine, and I placed the box in front of her. "Mulder! Dinner was enough. I can't accept this." "Of course you can. Besides, I can't return it. Go ahead, open the box." xxxxxxx I opened the box, and removed the tissue paper. Inside was a gold bracelet. I didn't know what to say. "Mulder..." "Look on the back--it's got an inscription." To DKS, from FWM: wear it often, but enjoy it always. "It's beautiful, Mulder. Thank you. Think I'll wear it right now." xxxxxxx She put it on, and it sparkled on her wrist. That, and with the candle on the table, gave Scully a lovely glow. I put my hand on the table, and she reached for it, looking at me with a beautiful smile on her face. I wanted to say something, but no words seemed to fit at this moment. "Scully..." xxxxxxx Our food arrived just as Mulder spoke my name. "Wow, this steak is huge! You know, Mulder, I haven't eaten all day, so I can honestly say that I *will* finish the whole thing." xxxxxxx The dinner was great. We both seemed to loosen up as it went along. Scully even had room for desert--strawberry cheesecake. I opted out. "Here, have a bite, Mulder." "No, thanks." "But it's so good!" xxxxxxx I waved a forkful in front of him. I knew he wouldn't be able to resist it! "Umm, very good, Scully." "Thanks for this. I did have a good time, just like you promised." "Oh, but the night is still young! Have you forgotten about Navy Pier?" "No, I haven't. But it's only 7:45. It's still early yet. I'd like another glass of wine, if you don't mind." "Of course I don't." xxxxxxx I poured the wine for her, and made a toast. "To Scully: a beautiful woman who deserves a beautiful night like tonight. Here's hoping we can do this again sometime. Cheers!" We clinked glasses. I do believe Scully just blushed! We both took a sip, and put our glasses down. Music had been softly playing in the background all during dinner. I took this as my opportunity, got out of my chair, and extended my hand... "Scully, may I have this dance?" xxxxxxx I got up, took his hand, and said only one word: "Yes." xxxxxxx I led Scully over to the small dance floor in the middle of the room. I put my hand on her lower back, and brought her close to me. Her perfume smelled great, and it started to invade my senses. She put her hand on my waist, and grasped my other hand. We slowly began to move. I don't know how long we stayed this way, but I didn't want it to end. Scully put her head on my chest, and sighed. "Scully?" "Mmm, yes, Mulder?" "How do you feel?" "I feel wonderful..." She pulled me closer, and I didn't resist. I could feel her bandages underneath the thin material of her dress. Scully started to softly hum to the melody. It was like a dream. I had this totally sexy woman in my arms, and I could hardly believe it myself... "Scully?" "Mmm, yes, Mulder?" "We'd better go now--it's 8:15." "OK--whatever you say." We went back to our table. Scully finished the rest of her wine, and sat down. I went to pay the check, leaving a generous tip. It was well deserved. When I came back, Scully held out her hand, I took it, and we walked out of the restaurant, and out of the hotel. My car was waiting, and I opened the door for her, and helped her inside. Scully leaned over and kissed me on the cheek, just as I was about to start the ignition. She didn't say anything. I think I'm blushing now... xxxxxxx NAVY PIER 600 E. GRAND AVENUE We got to Navy Pier at 8:25. We couldn't possibly see everything before the fireworks, so I thought I'd take Mulder to a couple of places I was especially interested in. xxxxxxx Scully took me up to the 2nd level to see the Crystal Gardens. Trees and green plants were everywhere. We sat down at a table and tried to see it all. The room was huge, so we got up and walked to the other side, and sat down there. Scully put her head on my shoulder, looked up at the ceiling, and closed her eyes. "This is all like a dream, Mulder. I don't want it to end!" I looked down at her face. She seemed so happy. "Mulder, what time is it?" "Nine o'clock. Why?" "We've got to see a couple more things. Let's go!" Next, we went to the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows. We saw some very old pieces from the early 19th Century, up to the present. "Let's go have a snack, Mulder." "After all we just ate? You've got to be kidding!" "No, I'm not. I saw a pretzel place when we went through the food court. Let's go get one." "I'll share one with you." "Great, then I know where we can go next!" 9:30pm I bought her a pretzel, but she didn't want to sit down to eat it. She grabbed my hand, and we ran outside. "The Ferris wheel? Oh, no, Scully." "Why not? It'll be fun, Mulder. Don't be a party pooper. Besides, it says here it's only a seven-minute ride. It's all lit up and it's so pretty, Mulder. I don't want to ride it by myself..." I couldn't deny her that, so I paid for our tickets. There were only two people in front of us, so we didn't have to wait long. It went 15 stories up in the air, and it was *really* slow. That was a pretty long seven minutes, but it had a spectacular view, especially when we got to the top. "OK, Scully--it's now 9:45. Where's a good spot for these fireworks?" "Just follow me..." We made a quick trip to the restroom before we went to the other end of the pier, until we got to the Grand Ballroom. It was empty now, since no special functions were taking place--too bad. I'd love to dance with Scully here. It was a little dim, since all the lights weren't on. I grabbed Scully's hand, twirled her around to face me, and began to softly hum Europa into her ear, while we danced. "Mulder! I'm surprised you remember the melody." "Can't get it out of my head--not since I heard it at your place. Look, it's 9:55, let's go outside and wait for the fireworks." "Yes. Here's a good spot. No one seems to be around. Think everyone forgot about them?" "No, I don't think so. The pier is so huge, you could probably see them just about anywhere." We looked out at the water of Lake Michigan. There was a full moon in the sky. I put my arm around Scully's waist, and she shivered. "Scully, you're cold! Here, put on my jacket." "I hadn't noticed how the temperature has dropped. I'll be alright, Mulder." "No, you won't! I don't want you to get sick." xxxxxxx He took off his jacket, and placed it on my shoulders. I put my arms through the sleeves. I wrapped myself in it. I could smell Mulder's cologne all over. "Mmm, what time is it, Mulder?" "9:59--you ready?" "Yes!" xxxxxxx They started on time. We looked up into the sky, and enjoyed the show. Scully started to yell, 'Look at that!' and 'Wow!' every few seconds. She must've really liked fireworks when she was a little girl. I just looked down at her, wondering what a fool I've been. We've been together all these years--why didn't we do this sooner? I looked at her one more time, before I pressed my lips against hers, as the fireworks exploded all around us. xxxxxxx I knew it was coming. I just didn't know when. I was watching the fireworks, and Mulder was watching me. When his lips touched mine in a gentle kiss, he nearly took my breath away. His lips were so soft, so tender. It was what happened afterwards that had me completely in shock... "I love you, Scully..." I couldn't say anything. I just took his hand, and we walked to the parking garage. Mulder drove us back to the hotel. SHERATON HOTEL ROOM 1735 10:27pm I let Mulder into my room, took off his jacket, and turned on the lights and the radio. We sat down on the couch. "Would you like a drink?" "No, Scully. Scully..." "No, Mulder. Don't say anything. Just dance with me, please?" xxxxxxx I could refuse her nothing. We went over to the window, and I put my arms around her. Then a song came on that totally fit the moment... I found out what I've been missing Always on the run I've been looking for someone Now you're here like you've been before And you know just what I need It took some time for me to see That you give good love to me, baby So good, take this heart of mine into your hands You give good love to me Never too much Baby, you give good love Never stopping, I was always searching For that perfect love... Then I guess I got a little *too* carried away... "Ow! Mulder, what are you trying to do--squeeze the life out of me?" "I'm sorry..." "Oooohhh..." "Are you alright, Scully?" "I'm fine! But I think you should leave." "You're not serious?" "I am, Mulder. Goodnight." I grabbed her by the shoulders. I couldn't believe this was happening! I started to get very upset. What just happened here? "Scully, I'm sorry. I forgot about your--" xxxxxxx I didn't let him finish. All I knew is that I got really scared. I don't like the look on Mulder's face. So I asked him to leave again... xxxxxxx Scully was actually backing away from me, like I would hurt her! I've got to get a handle on the situation here, and fast. I slowly walked towards her. "Scully, I think we just got confused about what--" "Mulder, I'm not confused. I asked you to leave. Please go." I still can't believe this. I can't leave her like this, not when she's looking at me like that... xxxxxxx Why won't Mulder leave? I asked him again. "Mulder? Please. Just go." "No, I'm not going anywhere. We need to talk about what just happened." "Mulder, I can't..." "Damn it, Dana! Stop pushing me away! You can't ask me to leave. I won't go." I was now yelling at her, but I didn't care. I saw Scully look at me. Her bottom lip started to quiver, and her eyes started to water, but no tears fell. That's it. I can't deal with this anymore... xxxxxxx Mulder finally left. What just happened here? I just told my best friend to leave, and I have no idea why. I picked up a glass, threw it at the door, and fell to the floor, wondering if I'd ever have my partner back again... xxxxxxx 10:45pm I stood there by Scully's door, just listening. When I heard a glass hit the door, I flinched. I took the keycard out of my pocket, and went to my room. I'm still confused. I don't know what to make of Scully's behavior. I really needed a drink right now, but I didn't want to drown my sorrows here, so I went downstairs... SPECTATORS 11:21pm I went to the bar for a drink. It was a sports bar, so all the games were playing on the televisions overhead. Great! I can get drunk, and watch the really awful Chicago Bulls play at the same time. I didn't think about Scully the whole time I was there. xxxxxxx WAVES, THE LOBBY BAR SUNDAY 12:27am After Mulder left, I just stood there in the middle of the room in shock. I turned off the radio, and looked out the window. Then I ended up downstairs at a bar. I needed a good stiff drink to get my mind off Mulder. I told the bartender to make me anything; I didn't care. I don't know how long I stayed down there, but once I started to get hit on by a guy who obviously had one too many, I went back to my room. Can't a girl get drunk in peace? xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 1:15am I could take it no longer. I had to throw in the towel. Think I heard everyone's life story in the entire bar. I wasn't willing to share, though. I went to my room, and fell down on the couch, where I fell asleep five minutes later. xxxxxxx ROOM 1735 2:02am I came back to my room. I saw Mulder's jacket on the couch. I sat down, picked it up, and inhaled. Mulder's scent was everywhere. I've ruined it all. And the funny thing is, almost the exact same thing happened at the beginning of the year... JANUARY 1st, 2000 12:00am We were in the hospital, as usual. Mulder's right arm is in a sling, from fighting off evil undead FBI agents--strange, but true. Frank Black just saw his daughter, Jordan, and took her home. Mulder and I watch the ball drop in New York City on television. The ten seconds tick down, "Auld Lang Syne" begins to play; the couples kiss. We're still looking at the screen. Then Mulder looks at me. He leans down, I turn toward him, and we kiss. For about seven seconds. We pull apart, look at each other, and smile. The world didn't end. No, it didn't. Happy New Year, Scully Happy New Year, Mulder. He puts his good arm around me, and we walk out of the hospital. We drove back to Alexandria in silence, to his apartment. When we got there, he took my hand, and led me over to the couch. He put his arms around my waist, held me close, and whispered my name. "Scully..." And before I knew it, I felt his breath on my neck. He started to kiss my earlobe, but I stopped him. I got up. I told him, "I can't do this..." and walked out of his apartment. I called for a cab downstairs and went home. We never talked about that night since it happened, but I'm pretty sure this was the first thing on his mind when I sent him away tonight. I didn't know what to do, so I called my mother. "Mom?" "Dana? Is that you?" "Yes." "What time is it?" "It's after 2am in Chicago, so it has to be after 3 where you are. I'm sorry, Mom. I should've called you later." "That's okay. Tell me what's wrong." So I told her everything about all the missed moments between Mulder and myself during our seven-year partnership. "I don't know what to do, Mom. I've ruined everything." "Do you love him, Dana?" "I'm not sure, but it doesn't make any difference. Don't you see? Mulder won't want to work with me anymore." "Sweetheart, I'm going to tell you something. Something I should have told you a long time ago about Fox." "What is it, Mom?" She told me about when I was taken by Duane Barry, and how Mulder was so frantic to find me. He had stopped sleeping, and almost stopped eating as well. She told me how Mulder had come to her house, and told her how he almost killed him. He said he couldn't tell his own mother; she wouldn't understand. He just walked around in a daze, until I was found in the hospital. How when she bought my headstone, Mulder would say that it wasn't my time to go. When she and Missy wanted to take me off life support, Mulder vehemently disagreed. He couldn't let himself watch me die. She told me how Missy urged him to come to the hospital to see me one last time. They gave him some privacy, and he talked to me all night. That I do remember. I had the strength of your beliefs... "He did all that? Why didn't he tell me?" "I guess he didn't want you to know how scared he was. You can fix this, Dana. I have faith in both you and Fox. You *will* get through this." "I don't think I can." "Keep thinking negative, and it'll never happen. Sleep on it. A few hours rest, and you'll feel lots better." "OK. Thanks, Mom, and thanks for telling me about Mulder." I got undressed and went to bed. I thought about everything my mother told me. Damn it, Mulder! Why didn't you ever tell me? xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 6:29am I was walking down a sandy beach. The sky was clear, and the sun was bright. No one was on the beach with me. Then I saw her. It was Scully. It was her red hair, though I couldn't see her face. She was wearing a long black nightgown, and it was blowing in the breeze. The right side had a slit in it, and I could see her leg, with a thin, gold chain around her ankle. I tried running to her, but I could never catch her. She was aware of my presence, though she never turned around to look at me. When I finally catch up to her, and turn her around to face me, she pushes me down into the sand, and walks away. Then she stops, walks back to me, holds out her hand, and helps me up. We start to walk down that sandy beach together. No words were said, but by the look on her face, all is forgiven. Just the touch of her hand was all I needed... I woke up, but not in a panic this time. I wasn't sure how to take the dream, so I went back to sleep. xxxxxxx ROOM 1735 7:49am I was in a beautiful garden. The flowers were in bloom, and it smelled heavenly. I was enjoying all the varieties, when I came across some tulips. When I bent down to pick up a purple one, I saw them. It was Melissa and Emily in a tree swing, with huge smiles on their faces. I ran towards them, trying to speak, but no words would come out of my mouth. That's when Melissa spoke. "Take a chance, Dana. Go to him. Tell Fox--I'm sorry--tell Mulder how you really feel about him." "Missy, I don't think I can," I say. "Yes you can, Dana. I have faith in you..." I woke up with a sense of calm all over me. I got out of bed, got dressed, and decided to go for a walk. 8:10am I started down Michigan Avenue, but something kept telling me I should go towards State Street, so I did. I walked for several blocks, until I came upon what was pulling me here, and I went inside... HOLY NAME CATHEDRAL 735 N. STATE STREET 8:40am I went inside and sat down in a pew in the back. It seems I arrived at the right time. The early service had just ended, with the next one starting at 9:30. It was a beautiful church. It had pillars, high ceilings, and stained glass windows everywhere. It had been cloudy all during my walk, and now the sun shined down through the windows. I closed my eyes, raised my head, and let the sun warm my face. I got down on my knees, and I prayed. I knew what I had to do. SHERATON HOTEL ROOM 1735 9:30am I walked back to the hotel. I was so tired, but I had to do this now, before I lost my nerve. I called the concierge to get it for me, and hoped Mulder would accept it. xxxxxxx ROOM 1736 7:30pm I heard a knock on my door for Room Service. I went to the door. I hadn't ordered anything. This has got to be a mistake! The deliverer just handed it to me, and said to enjoy it. I went back into my room, and sat down. The tray was light. I lifted the lid. Inside was a bag of sunflower seeds, with a note from Scully. I was all set to throw it away, when I thought better of it. I opened up the bag, took a few seeds out, popped them into my mouth, and started to read her note. Mulder, I know I acted like a real bitch last night, and for that I'm sorry. I ruined a pretty nice evening between us. I don't know what came over me. No, that's not entirely true. I don't really want to do this on paper, so if you can find it in your heart to forgive me, please come over to my room at 10pm tonight, so I can do this in person. If you don't show up, I'll understand. I'll put in for a transfer from the X-Files immediately once we return to DC. Hopefully, it won't come to this. Scully I took a deep breath. Scully wants to apologize. I guess I should give her the chance to do so. xxxxxxx ROOM 1735 9:59pm It's been raining for the last half hour. After I wrote Mulder's note, I took a nap. I woke up at five, showered, and had a light dinner. I shouldn't have told him to meet me so late. He won't come... 10:13pm He's not coming. I've been looking out the window at the rain. I started to cry. Looks like both me and the sky can be sad together. I sank to the floor, wondering how much of a mess I've made of everything. Then I heard the door opening. I quickly jumped up, and wiped the tears away from my face. I didn't want Mulder to see me in such a vulnerable position, so I took a deep breath, and continued to look out the window. xxxxxxx 10:15pm I finally got the nerve to come here. I opened the door, only to find darkness. I went inside, and found Scully, standing by the window, with the curtains wide open, looking at the rain. She had a candle burning on the table, next to her pictures of Melissa & Emily, and a small vase, with a single purple tulip inside. I started to say something, but she beat me to it. "It hasn't rained here since the day I had my accident." "Oh, Scully..." "No, let me finish this, or I'll never get it out. It was raining just like this, and I had decided not to let this get me down on my first day here. I got in the cab, and everything was going right, until that car came out of nowhere. When the headlights flashed in my face, the first thing I thought was, 'I'm going to die.' And I wanted it to be over. I didn't want to be injured, so you would have to see me in another hospital bed. I wanted to be dead, so you could mourn, and move on." "Scully, how can you say that?" "Wouldn't you want the same, if it had been you in that accident instead of me? I saw those lights, and I didn't think about not seeing my mother, brothers, sister-in-law, and nephew again. My first thoughts were of you. That's right, it was you, Mulder. I knew that if I died, I wouldn't see your beautiful face, ever again. I would miss that, so I wanted to be dead." Why wasn't she looking at me? I wanted to go to her, but something held me back. She continued. "I wanted to be in Heaven, so I could see my darling Melissa, and my precious Emily again. And Daddy, too." "Scully, why are you saying this?" "Because it's the truth, and I'm here to confess. Someone told me once to take a chance, and I choose to take it now." "Who told you that?" "My sister." "Melissa? When was this?" "In a dream. I've had it three times. The last time was this morning. I'm sorry for the way I acted last night, Mulder. I don't ever want to hurt you. But now I'm ready to say what's in my heart. All the things I wouldn't admit to myself, nevertheless say out loud." "Scully, please. I need you to look at me. I can't bear this anymore. I have to see your face!" I think she started to crumble. She didn't turn around, but she offered me her right hand instead. I took it gladly. She slowly turned around and faced me. I could see the tears on her cheeks. How long had she been crying? I couldn't tell. Her voice was so calm. I took her other hand, and she looked straight at me. "Mulder, I wanted to say it so many times. I love you, too. I was so afraid of saying those words aloud. I didn't want to ruin the great friendship we have together. So I'm going to take my sister's advice, and admit my true feelings for you. I love you, Mulder. You're my constant, my touchstone..." "And you are mine." Scully had the hugest grin on her face. I found myself returning it, and trying not to cry myself. I wiped her tears away. "When you didn't come, I feared that I had lost you forever..." That was it. I couldn't take it anymore. I enveloped her in my arms, trying not to hold her too tightly. "Scully, it'll take more than a silly misunderstanding to get me out of your life. I'll admit I was angry, but after a couple of beers, and a really bad basketball game, I calmed down." She started to laugh. We went over to the couch, and sat down. "A couple of beers, and bad basketball?" "Yeah, I went down to Spectators after you kicked me out." "You did? I went to Waves, and had two martinis." "Looks like we both had the same idea, Scully." "Yeah, remind me to never do that again!" I looked at my watch. It was almost eleven o'clock. I hope my request went through... "Mind if I turn the radio on? I'd like to dance with you." "I don't mind. Any particular reason why?" "Maybe, but I can't tell you. You'll find out soon enough..." xxxxxxx That sounded mysterious. And I did find out, a few minutes later... "Europa? Thanks, Mulder." "That's why I was late. I was trying to reach the radio station. Once I did, I told them they had to play it for a very special lady." "Shhh! Dance with me, Mulder!" xxxxxxx So we danced, never taking our eyes off each other, until the song was over. Scully put her head on my chest, and I held her close to me. Maybe it was a little too close again, for I heard Scully cry out. "I'm sorry, Scully. I won't--" "It wasn't you, Mulder. Your touch was light. I guess I need to take my pills." "Close your eyes, Scully." "What?" "Just close your eyes. It'll feel better in a few minutes." She smiled, and closed her eyes. I picked her up, carried her to the bedroom, and laid her down on the bed. "Wow, Mulder! I didn't feel a thing. You must be a miracle worker!" "No time for jokes, Scully. Here's some water. Take two pills." "Yes, Dad!" I smiled at her. "You know, Mulder, you don't have to go. I've got plenty of room for two." "I wasn't planning on going anywhere. I was just wondering how I'm ever going to get any sleep with you in this purple nightgown. I like it very much!" "You do? I got it when I got my dress. I've got your tuxedo jacket in my closet." "Let's not worry about that right now..." xxxxxxx His voice dropped an octave, and he kissed me on the back of my neck. "I've been wanting to do that all day..." "And I've been wanting to do this all day, Mulder..." xxxxxxx She turned around to face me. She got closer, and her lips met mine. When her tongue dipped inside my mouth, it caught me completely off guard. "Scully?" "Yes, Mulder?" "I love you," I said in a husky whisper. We kissed again. I ran my hand down her bare leg, and touched her ankle chain. I heard a sharp intake of breath, as Scully put her hand on her stomach. "We can take this slow, Scully. We'll both know when the time is right. Just let me hold you tonight. Lie down on your stomach, and I'll rub your back again. That always seems to work." xxxxxxx He was right, of course. He rubbed my back, and he held me, until I fell asleep, which wasn't long. xxxxxxx MONDAY 1:20am It was incredible. I was in Scully's bed, watching her sleep. I heard her say my name a couple of times, and reach for me, but she wasn't scared. Her face was calm, completely at peace. No nightmares. Good. I lay back down next to her, and she snuggled up against me. This is the way it should always be... xxxxxxx 3:03am It was incredible. Mulder was in my bed, sleeping. I couldn't take my eyes off him. He was so beautiful, in his yellow pajamas. I could hardly believe it. And to think I almost threw it all away! I wanted to tell him about my conversation with my mother, but I didn't have the heart to wake him. So I did the next best thing. I laid back down, kissed him on his neck, and closed my eyes, listening to his steady, rhythmic breathing, until I fell asleep again... 11:30am We woke up late, and ordered breakfast. We ate in bed. I didn't want to, but I had to let Mulder go, to pack. We had a flight later on tonight back to DC. We were both finding it hard to let the vacation end. xxxxxxx 7:15pm I took Scully to Maxwell Street to have a real Chicago hot dog, and then I drove her to Olive Park, where we could look at Lake Michigan up close one more time. Our flight wasn't until 11:35, so I asked her if there was anything else she wanted to do. She said yes, but we would have to do it on the way to the airport. 9:30pm We had our bags placed in the trunk of the cab, and we were on our way. Scully wouldn't tell me where we were going. She told me to close my eyes, so I would be surprised. When we got there, I was. "I just had to see it at night." "Buckingham Fountain. I remember you telling me about a light show. Thanks, Scully." We held hands, and walked around the fountain, enjoying all the colored lights. It was much better at night. We stopped, and I put my arms around Scully's waist. "I love you, Scully." "I love you, Mulder." We kissed, and continued around the fountain. We got back in the cab, and sped towards the airport. O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT 11:00pm We waited the half hour before we could board the plane. Once we got inside, I caught Scully yawning. "Sleepy?" "Yes, all of a sudden. At least I'll have all of Tuesday to get rid of jet lag." "Then back to work on Wednesday. Looking forward to it?" "I'm not sure. We've been gone so long..." I knew how she felt. But, it was time to get back to the real world of unknown phenomena with the X-Files. I think I'll surprise Scully on Wednesday morning... TUESDAY 2:15am We made it back to DC without any problems. I offered to share a cab with Scully, but she refused. She told me to go home, get unpacked, and get some sleep. I got home and called her. No answer. She must not be home yet. My phone rang a few minutes later. Scully told me she was okay. But I really wanted to see her again, so I jumped in my car and drove to her place. 3:30am I made it here in record time. If only I could drive at this time of the day all the time. I knocked on her door. No answer. But I could hear the radio playing, and it was really loud. Hope she doesn't wake up the neighbors. I let myself in. She was in the shower; I could hear the water running. I went to her bedroom. Her bathroom door was slightly ajar, so she could hear the radio, I guess. An Aretha Franklin song came on, and to my shock, Scully started singing it *very* loud! She didn't sound too bad either, or was that just my imagination? Oh baby, what you've done to me/You make me feel so good inside/And I just want to be close to you/You make me feel so alive/'Cause you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like a natural woman... The song ended, and so did Scully's shower. I sat down on the other side of the bed, so she wouldn't see me when she came out of the bathroom. "Feeling like a natural woman, Scully?" "Jesus, Mulder! What are you doing here?" "I just wanted to see you one more time today." "OK--you've seen me. Now, go home!" "What if I don't want to go?" xxxxxxx xxxxxxx She had a purple towel wrapped around her slim body, and her hair was wet, clinging to her. She looked good enough to eat. I grabbed her, and pulled her close. "Scully! You smell so good, and you taste so good, too!" xxxxxxx He was kissing me, and I was finding it very hard to keep my towel on. "Don't worry, Scully. It's nothing I haven't seen before!" "OK, Mulder! Time to go home. I need to get some sleep." "I'll sleep with you." "No, not tonight. I hope you're not disappointed with me." "That's alright. Next time?" "Count on it." I kissed him on the nose, and sent him home. I put on my pajamas, turned the radio off, and slipped under my own sheets, for the first time in a month. Chicago was wonderful, but it was so good to be home! xxxxxxx FBI HEADQUARTERS X-FILES OFFICE WEDNESDAY 6:30am I got here early, so I could surprise Scully with a 'Welcome Back To The Office' party. Just for two. I listened for the elevator, and hid behind some boxes. She came in on time at 7am. xxxxxxx I got here on time, and made my way down to our office. When I walked through the door, Mulder was nowhere to be found. But, I had gifts waiting for me at my desk. A blueberry muffin, a steaming cup of coffee, and a single purple tulip. "Mulderr..." "Did someone say my name? Welcome back to the office, Scully!" "Thank you. I love my presents." "And I love you." "I love you, too. That will never change." "Never?" "Not while I'm alive." "That's good to hear. Eat quickly. Skinner left us a note, to see him ASAP. He's got a case for us..." I shared my muffin and coffee with him, and then we took the elevator up to Skinner's office. I didn't know how long I had the smile on my face today, and I didn't care. I just knew that the distance between Mulder and I was gone, and we were now ready to go back to being work partners, soulmates, and possibly even more in the future. And I couldn't wait. *END* Want to know more about the Chicago Picasso? Go here: http://chicago.about.com/library/weekly/aa080700b.htm?terms Chicago+Picasso Want to know more about Navy Pier?
